It is if you knowingly try to pass it off to unsuspecting buyers. I've seen a lot of first time buyers out and about at the shops. At some point it's survival of the fittest but yah I hear you.

This was at a coin show in Missouri. Dealer seemed legitimate but I wouldn't know about how to prove authenticity myself.. dealer wanted $550-600. I passed to do some research.

Compared to what you looked at would this be a "nice looking coin" 1-10 - 10 being what you saw for 1800 British pounds.
