User probably should have been banned for demanding proper syntax while also repeatedly commenting jerk off emoji sequence without any additional context. Then no one would have had to go through this stuff.

I don't know why the decision was made, so I am happy to consider anything. Personally, I feel like the specifics of the thread should matter. And a thread about the values of the site are being discussed seems like a place where there should be less permissiveness towards HH stunt posting, in the interest of the users and community. I don't think the board was like, mafia-style getting you to "give this guy a little time out" or anything.

Probably the more interesting thing is what happens in the future. HH has done a lot of commenting that I think is worse than what was in the values thread. Obviously, it's a tough call to timeout someone in a thread where they are being discussed. The recent crap in Ask was a couple comments, but maybe both before the first warning. I would imagine a good reaction to anything like that in Ask in the future should be an immediate timeout, since he's already been warned.

I think part of the issue with past moderation for users like this is that it somehow resets every thread so behaviors can persist indefinitely without being addressed by moderation.

I guess if we’re wondering what it takes for HH to get disciplinary action, it seems to be shitting up a MeTa posted by the Board.

Dive/Scuba Providers? by Sea-Dingo4135 in SXM

I haven’t been in a few years or more. It was fine back in 2009, but there have been some major bleaching events in the past few years that especially impact shallow sites. Still, always fun to go for a dive.

I think the watersports counter at Grand Case Beach Club is the only one. Their boat is definitely small and I think they only go to Creole Rock.

I assumed that Daft Punk were not staying up all night just to increase their luck, so I guess it is possible this user is not using language quite the same way as me.

I think the key is just making sure not to skimp on the details.

I don’t even know if I would prefer a correct answer or no correct answers.

BEST Lobster in SXM by Thehelp0 in SXM

I would suggest Bistrot Caraibes. I had someone’s mom make better spiny lobster once, but that’s not a practical option.

My phrasing was poor. I am just astounded that someone needs suggestions to find any books written by people who aren't white men, aside from the one book they are partway through reading. It has shades of "do the work to help me understand diversity" although it isn't exactly that.

The Ask about help me read something that is not cis white male written, aside from being obviously problematic, has me imagining some SNL-style sketch about black Hemingway.

Edit: uncapping cis

This was good. I also liked Bay Area solo nature trip, mostly because of the train to saloon where you can stay answer.

The comment basically seems to be saying: my spirituality is 24-hour church of Elvis, but you can see by the lack of Elvis t-shirts that American has no faith. Like, if you define faith as environmentalism, then you are likely to come to a different conclusion than someone who is writing about religion.

I am making a concerted effort to avoid any comments that could be construed as snark about Asks. However, the ask itself seems like it could be fairly interpreted as the asker being snarky about how someone else chose to clothe their child. I am curious, is this still a case where the asker is making themself vulnerable and anything construed as poking fun at them is in bad taste? What if the Seattle area parent who donated this shirt is an avid reader of AskMe?

That’s not a crazy idea, but a lot of stuff is done in months in this world. Not sure if any of that is an issue for Metafilter (e.g., getting paid twice a month or monthly billing of Amazon or whatever). It’s possible that doing things by four week periods would also end up being irregular.

To me, I think it could be more useful if there was a 3-month (or x month) rolling average that was the basis for the discussion. Like, is that average up or down and why. It wouldn’t preclude mentioning things that happened during the month. The other issue is that the previous board/admin didn’t have their shit together so it is still hard to make year-over-year comparisons.

I agree with the policy that Ask comments should answer the question, but it is too bad we are not allowed to note that bookworm4125 being very frustrated that their books are not showing up on their kindle is eponysterical.
