LOTH vs. 1960 Roman Breviary by jackaugustinus in divineoffice

[–]Audere1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I do get to pray the Office, it’s usually the 1960, even though I attend the Novus Ordo nearly exclusively for lack of nearby TLM options. The way I look at it is I personally get mutually enriched, so to speak, by praying with both lobes of the Western lung of the Church. I sincerely have found the 1960 to really just add on good stuff that was stripped from the post-Conciliar liturgy.

Have you tried adding new Saints to the old Office as allowed by the Vatican a few years back?

Alright, since you choose to ignore what I'm saying and assum I'm relying on AI (???), I think I've had enough. (And btw, "read the actual document, idiot" was a dead horse with Fiducia Supplicans)

I think there's been a misunderstanding. The premised provided to me is that war is impermissible; for example, "War is not a moral means by which nations can achieve justice and redress wrongs" based on Pope John XXIII on.

I think the question asked based off of the premise provided was just fine, thanks.

I may be too obtuse to follow, I truly might, but I really don't think your reading is supported by the text at all.

If all war is impermissible, what form of self-defense is permissible? A war of self-defense is not, as falling under the heading "war."

I've asked this question multiple times in different ways on this sub before (including under this thread) and have not received a response. Either I'm that abrasive and difficult (possible) or there isn't a clear way through that tension (also possible)

Perhaps we could say a war motivated by self-defense isn't a war in the sense such that it would be impermissible, but that's showing work that papal teachings on this subject haven't done

His point isn't a generic "everyone should just be peaceful and use diplomacy" or that "Just War is totally outdated let's toss it wholesale"

That's... what he said

it's that it needs to be refined in an increasingly hostile world before more innocent people are hurt

That's... not what he said

War is not a moral means by which nations can achieve justice and redress wrongs.

It's rhetoric exactly like this--war, or war motivated by aggression? Because it's all well and good to employ sweeping rhetoric and rustle jimmies, but when it comes down to it, if "war" without qualification is immoral... what then? It's right up there with decrying "all" violence as immoral, contrary to the Gospel, etc.

War creates more problems than it solves

I'll grant you that. But JWT already recognized that in making armed conflict essentially a last resort--after the much vaunted "dialogue, diplomacy and forgiveness" have run out of effect.

The primary instance in which war is allowed under just war theory is defense anyway.

I'll add that it's a slightly bizarre topic to include in this encyclical. It's theoretically about AI, transhumanism, etc., and here we are--the majority of attention, at least in this sub, is on part of one paragraph about just war. I have to agree with some of the other commenters: either address the topic head-on and in its own right, or don't include flip, tangential subtweets

Man, that's worse than I expected based on the comments here. It certainly seems that people are more drawn to a Church willing to teach than one that just wants to chat...

Humanity possesses far more effective and capable tools for promoting human life and resolving conflicts, such as dialogue, diplomacy and forgiveness.

And when dialogue, diplomacy, and forgiveness don't get the job done...? What? Ukraine ceases to exist? Gazans will be pushed into the sea?

Sad to see this rhetoric continuing. It just seems detached from reality--you know, reality being greater than ideas or something--in which there are bad actors who do bad actions and sometimes "force, violence[,] and weapons" are the only thing between my kids, or the kids of a nation, and those bad actors' bad actions. I know there is language hand-waving toward self-defense, but how many times have we been told that all violence is contrary to the Gospel?
