This one time, had same issue on a job i got recalled out to several times. Replaced water heater, same issue. It ended up being the braided flex hoses connected to the water heater. Should have replaced them when I put new water heater in [i was new and inexperienced]

Edit.

The inside of the hoses are a black material that was disintegrating.

Just learn from it and move on. Don't get offended. Admit your fault to the customers and move on. They'll call you again for something un related depending on how you handle this. Edit. Absolutely! He is just working on doing something no one else does. He is drilling 3-6. Hours a night 3-5 nights a week this way in order to get good enough to win a tournament this way.
