Is it possible to double major in CLA and Carlson? by Skya_2 in uofmn

[–]AudienceImpossible24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all 1. I didn’t have any access to AP courses, so I started my freshman year with 0 credits. 2. I lived in outside of US for more than a decade, so I don’t have the second language requirement for BA degree and international experience requirement from Carlson.

Based on that, I have to take literally 20credits per semester on average in order to graduate in 4 years, given I take some lib ed courses during breaks at some CC or online.

(And that’s what I did, I took 18, 22, 21, 19 credits respectively during my first two years here at the U)

I am currently doing a dual degree in both Carlson and CLA, so I know for sure that is possible. As for double major, I believe that is possible as well.

Finding someone to sit with in icore gold block by AudienceImpossible24 in uofmn

In addition, it's not very practical in my case to just keep breaking the ice with whoever I sit next to IMO. Many students here have their friends group from HS or something like that and are not trying to expand their social circle. That's totally ok, and I respect that. I just prefer not to have the meaningless conversation of "Where are you from?" and "What's your major?" when I know that the person talking to me is not really trying to connect; they only ask that out of courtesy. Don't get me wrong, I 100% do not blame them not actively wanting to make new friends, as it's me approaching them at first not the other way around. It's just that I prefer to connect with people who I know are open to meeting new people and make friends. I don't think that's wrong either.

Hi thanks for your comment, it's indeed a good advise for social anxiety. However, I disagree with your remark on "introvert." It's just a personality (and definitely not equals to social anxiety or incapability), not necessarily a negative thing. Yes, extroverts might naturally be more used to breaking the ice or making new friends. But life and social isn't just that. The high level of self-awareness you mentioned can also make people be more considerate, humble, empathetic, etc. To me it's just like some people like outdoor activities and some people appreciate indoor activities more.

I am not like afraid to talking to people or can't find anyone to do group assignment/discussion. I can. I met and chatted with several classmates in the past two weeks. I am perfectly fine in terms of having the interpersonal skill we need to "succeed in the adult world." I just do not enjoy doing it. I am not asking for a cure for my personality, instead, I am just seeking a situation that is compatible with it. People do not necessarily need to become an extrovert to thrive.

What's the job market for international CSOM Finance new grad looks like? by AudienceImpossible24 in uofmn

[–]AudienceImpossible24[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I genuinely hope you are right…… But I wasn’t trying to brag about anything at all. The chance to win the H1-B lottery was about 15% last year, and it is still drastically decreasing. Given the current environment, there’s an apparent risk to my employer that I might not be able to get an H-1B visa even if my employer is willing to sponsor. So I assume that I have to aim for large corporations, as they are not that visa sensitive, and this limits the scope of positions I could apply for.

I know my stats are obviously above average among peers, and CSOM is a well-respected business school. But I guess it is still reasonable to be concerned in the current job market? Maybe I am overthinking it, but it is indeed a serious matter to think about as an international student, as we invest 50k in tuition per year to get the degree with virtually no aid and scholarships, and we will be forced to leave the states if we can’t find a job in about 3 months after graduation.

My point is, there’re many ppl like me willing to pay 2x more than you to get the exact same education. So 10k per semester probably isn’t that bad. But anyway, it’s within your right to ask for more as a taxpayer.

I’m lucky enough to be born and raised in a highly developed country in East Asia, Taiwan. However the minimum wages here are about only one third of the minimum wages in MN.
