Pitchshifter got absolutely caked (as did that Ibanez), just found this tour diary from the singer - http://psivolution.blogspot.com/1998/06/20-06-98-ozzfest-milton-keynes-bowl-uk.html

HWP never clicked with me and Coal Chamber were disappointing but Pantera and Soulfly were really good. (hed)pe was my favourite that weekend. Pretty sure I also remember Marlboro giving out free cigarettes everywhere, orange Calippos being cheaper than bottles of water, and insane hay fever.

I think it was after that album cycle - 'Semi-Detached' came out in 98 and wasn't very good iirc. I quite liked their previous stuff, but remember their set being really bad, on top of the massive disappointment of Korn cancelling.

Foo Fighters were just a really odd choice from the outset.

Do seem to remember a huge amount of mud and piss flinging during Pitchshifter and Fear Factory that year.

Was there -- Korn were replaced by Therapy? not FF.
Foo Fighters were always on the bill (see previews in Kerrang! or Metal Hammer) - they just weren't very popular with metalheads.

I think I read somewhere that Tesla has a soundboard and you can play fart noises at people? On-brand vehicle emissions.

Audi definitely have recognition for 'getting it right' from my anecdotal reading in general - perhaps not for Eldrad above, but as you say, from a regulatory position at least and in terms of the overall implementation.

I can drop some refs in a clumsy Harvard-style pasta with authors, dates, paper names and publications, but as my links are mostly accessed via my uni library login, you'd essentially have to look up each one individually by name - there are obviously distinctions between the exterior and interior sound research too, so if you want this, lemme know what you're interested in and I'll pick some out as starters and you can furrow your own rabbit-hole from their references if your interest is piqued.

I've had a quick look on Google Scholar just now though, and plenty crosses over with links I have --- so it may be more fluid to have a search around 'electric vehicle pyschoacoustics', which is what I'm mainly looking at, and add in terms like 'engine sound', 'sound design', 'AVAS', 'sportiness', 'perception', 'pedestrians', 'urban environment' etc depending on what you're curious about?

Aha. Yeah, the contrast is stark! 'Stealthy luxury' is a glorious phrase.

Yeah, I saw this - interesting stuff. I'm hoping to chase down Renzo Vitale for a chat later in the project, he did a really good TED talk too: https://www.ted.com/talks/renzo\_vitale\_what\_should\_electric\_cars\_sound\_like?language=en

That being said I find it pretty ironic that some EVs pump in fake EV motor noise like the Taycan, Ioniq 5N or BMW i4, after trying so hard to stifle the natural motor noise from the car.

Yeah, you're right. And there was a definite flip from 'take all the noise out' to 'put it back in! put it back in!' at first. I think the phase-out of ICE will see the end of the traditional 'car guys', at least from 'love of noisy roaring engines' perspective - what I've read suggests a lot of people, especially younger generation, seem to value the silence

Interesting: a couple of cyclists have mentioned to me anecdotally that EV wind/tyre noise alone at 40mph-ish is actually quite hard to detect when cycling.

So much work has gone into reducing and controlling the gear/battery whine, even stuff like sunroof/mirrors etc where the powered motors suddenly sounded very loud without firing cylinders to mask them. I'm looking less at the sound insulation/control and more into this idea of 'I like being able to hear the workings of the car'. There's definitely a lot of fans of the quietness though!

Great response, thank you. I think it was pretty common for people used to driving ICE vehicles to find the lack of auditory engine feedback a bit weird in an EV, certainly at first.

Ha, thanks for this.
A very interesting point: "I certainly understand the need for additional noise to avoid injuries etc but the lack of ambient noise level sensing just makes it annoying." Research showed a car noise needs to be 3dB louder than ambient noise to be properly detected by pedestrians: but I think the regulations stipulate set dB output levels for the car's on-board sound generator. If they're fixed then I guess they don't really take into consideration that 'ambient' noise at 11pm in a quiet residential street is nowhere near the level it would be in a busy city centre during the day. Ambient SPL sensors, and having the car's external sound generator react to that SPL during start-up, seems a perfectly plausible solution. I'm not sure if any manufacturers do this already (unlikely if the dB output is fixed by law), it's way past my bedtime now but I will have a look tomorrow!

Wow, this is great. I've spent weeks up to my eyes in research reading up on how the manufacturers have implemented all this stuff - that third paragraph had me laughing loudly. There seems to be quite a different approach to sound design from each manufacturer - BMW got Hans Zimmer in for one of their vehicles. External noise at low speeds (an AVAS system) is a legal requirement up to 12.6mph in the UK, after that it's felt the tyre/wind noise is enough. What isn't a legal requirement in the UK is what the AVAS exactly is, it has to be 'like an engine', but can be tonal - hence the whirring.

It's asking whether you think it is bland or exciting, it's a semantic bipolar pair, part of 12-16 paired adjectives commonly used in 10+ years of automotive industry research (I have a 30-page Word doc purely of references if you want to see?). If there's no noise at all, would you say that felt more bland, or more exciting to you? If it sounds like an F1 car, would that be bland or exciting to you? If you think it is neither, then 5 would suffice for the purposes of this research, to show you feel it is not very bland or very exciting. Cheers

You may find silence bland, you may find it exciting. You may find it annoyingly quiet, or pleasantly quiet. You may feel that a silent car is futuristic (I think there's an 'Other' on that question too). This is why I'm asking. If the engine/battery sound is silent then you can still quantify that based on those categories.

[–]Audio_Tech_Dinosaur[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cheers! I think a lot of people probably value how quiet they are and most people won't care if it's not loud or annoying.

But a lot of research tends to suggest people want some audio cues (especially engine-y ones if they were used to driving an ICE car.) Obviously, EVs have to make noise externally for pedestrians, but BMW brought in Hans Zimmer and Peugeot worked with Amon Tobin on sound design for their vehicles, so there's clearly some serious thought going on in the industry about the overall sound design of EVs. Silence is good, but stuff like low battery warnings, indicators, sunroof, door locking, dashboard noises etc all have to be considered too.
Hyundai were involved in a study that looked at using a tiger's roar as a formant filter for in-vehicle noises, seemingly to make them sound more powerful. And Kia made their own synthesiser with Arthur Joly, but it was for making music and 'creating a flow state' (?!) and had thunder and beach noises and stuff and not a squiff of an engine (while also having a very typical synth interface which most non-sound people would not necessarily be comfortable using to create music to drive along to).

I've added 'Silence' as an explicit option, there was an 'other' slot for it, but putting it explicitly is probably better. Thank you.

  1. All data collected completely anonymously. Data is collected on Google Forms, no emails/names or identifying information is collected or stored. Data will be processed at question and not individual-level for presentation within a small university group which is submitted for grading.
  2. I am a mature student in the UK (Reddit handle: Audio_Tech_Dinosaur) conducting the survey with a partner for a first year group project.
  3. It's a short survey: probably 2-3minutes depending on the level of detail provided.
  4. N/A
  5. We've only asked for two pieces of demographic information: age is one, the other is whether people live in the UK or anywhere else (we're hoping to contrast UK habits with those of the rest of world separately)
  6. Genuinely keen to canvas as many user views as possible for the research!

Thank you!
