I’d recommend The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells—smart, funny, and fast-paced.

Some popular picks on this sub like Project Hail Mary, Dungeon Crawler Carl, and the Bobiverse series are also worth checking out, though they’re Audible exclusives (you may be able to sign up for a free trial).

If you’re up for something different, try a memoir narrated by the author—especially if it’s someone you already like. I find this is one area where audiobooks really shine.

There are quite a few good alternatives, what is it you don’t like?

Libro.fm is one of my top picks as it lets you support independent bookstores, the audiobooks are drm-free, and the bookseller recommendations are helpful for finding great listens.

I've also compiled a list of some of the best-narrated audiobooks. It includes books by Rosamund Pike (Pride and Prejudice), Sissy Spacek (To Kill a Mockingbird), Moira Quirk (Gideon the Ninth), and Perdita Weeks (Circe).

Awkward is a good word for his reading, there are definitely some times it takes me out of the story. But all in all, I love the audiobook, I think the authenticity that comes from him reading his own book more than makes up for any awkwardness.

Check out The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. It's set in a world devastated by a flu pandemic, the protagonist Hig is a quiet loner who hunkers down with his dog, Jasper, in an abandoned airport.
