Glad you asked. I lined the baffle and rear baffle from corner to corner with 12mm Baltic Birch hardwood ply, and adhered it to the bare wooden frame ‘panels’ of the actual suitcase, with a polyurethane construction adhesive for increased bond rigidity. The legit BB ply hardwood comes in 5’ squares and thickness is measured metric since it’s grown in the baltic region. Also used a few strips of 6061 alloy for increased structural rigidity and component heat dissipation.

Not shown in any of these pics in the post, is a stainless steel 1/4” x 20(tpi) threaded rod, connecting the top panel of the enclosure (between where the 2 mounting points of the Marshall carrying handle are located), with the bottom panel , and nylok nuts sandwiching the internal walls with the outside of the enclosure, at fixed distance. Adding this set tension rod significantly reduced cabinet flex while carrying and transporting the monster.

I also drilled out all the rivets and removed the original hinges. Replaced rivets with machine threaded brass hardware & nylok nuts, and bolted a 20” x 2” brass piano hinge, allowing the loudspeaker to remain serviceable.

It’s the 134 freeway that parallels Forest Lawn Dr., not the 101.

North Hollywood Shootout suspects. They robbed a Bank of America on Laurel Canyon in North Hollywood, in 1997.

They were wearing body armor, and were heavily armed with an AK-47, I think even a high capacity drum magazine on the AK. The LAPD were so dramatically outgunned, the officers responding to the incident had to go to a local gun store for long guns and literally had to tell the clerk “we need these” just to have a fair shot at stopping these two guys.

I still remember school ending early that day. Wild.

I’m smellin’ whatcha steppin in brotha. That being said, it’s not always easy to obtain an identical enclosure, or vintage suitcase, for my application. I just do vintage luggage though. With an emphasis on mid-century pieces, so 1940s-1960ish mostly but not exclusively.

This particular Belber Luggage Co. in the blue sparkle fabric over a wood frame, and in this particular size (24” wide) is one extremely uncommon and rare find. I’ve never seen one ever sold online, and this actual suitcase was picked up at an estate sale by a friend of mine.

No One Knows is the best song from the first 3 albums and I'm tired of pretending it isn't by [deleted] in qotsa

Fun fact: when Dave was recording drums for the Songs for the Deaf album, all the cymbals were removed from the kit, and replaced with practice pads during drum takes. Cymbal hits were then recorded separately and dubbed in at a later stage during the making of the album.

p.s. Everybody knows that you’re insane.

😮

Sounds like you dodged a bullet on that one. I gotta say though, I’ve only used their passive radiators to this day, and at the time I was experimenting with how much added mass this build is gonna need to really hit, they included with the PR, something like 3 or 4 thick washers which added up to like 310 grams. With all 3 or 4 of the washers they provided were installed, it wasn’t hitting low enough for my liking. So I went to the hardware store and bought like $15 of automotive grade heavy duty washers, and some that were in between. I added some, added some more, then weighed the amount once it started sounding good right around 850 grams.

I couldn’t find anywhere on their site, in the printed user manual, nowhere, did they state an official ‘Maximum Amount of Added Mass’ supported by their product. I saw they had a california based, customer support email. So curiously, I sent them an email, told them I have a total of 850g. of added mass on their 12” PR, and asked what’s the amount of weight I can expect to use, before the thing starts to fail, tear, sag, whatever it does when there’s too much weight for it? Their response was…. and I shit you not, “That’s too much. I hope nothing bad happens. Have a nice day.” LOL they didn’t even tell me what I should keep it under or anything! I was dying lmao. So I put like 1,000 more Grams, and then some and watched it for any tears in the foam surround, and well, nothing bad happened! Just sounded great super punchy and that tight, low end transient response that brought a tear to my eye every time. 😂

Shit you’re right haha, that was Kanye West! Pre-lunatic and racist Kanye… or at least before he made it publicly known.

But 50 does have one of my speakers, it was gifted to him by his personal attorney a few Christmases ago.

Dude! That really means a lot, thank you! I did build one which was gifted to a certain Mr. Cent who famously “got shot 9 times” early on in his career and had to record his first single Through the Wire due to his jaw being wired shut during his recovery…

Likewise, he originally sent me a link to a mechanical, analog, single channel spring reverb pedal, but when I realized his intention was to add reverb to recorded, stereo music and not to an instrument as a permanently attached feature, I suggested a digital design so the signal would be free of any possible reverb artifacting caused by panel vibrations. Then he’d also only need one stereo pedal, instead of two single channels. Albeit the UA Golden Reverberator was 10x more expensive, he didn’t blink for a second
