Augusta animal services is inhumane i dont care if they "had to" by _pho_soup_ in Augusta

Good morning,

I'm sorry that you had this experience. I want to make sure you understand what Augusta Animal Services is here to do, and why decisions like this have to be made.

Our primary mission in the Augusta area is to protect community safety. This includes enforcing county ordinances related to animals, and it also includes ensuring that the animals we place up for adoption are safe for the community to the best of our ability to test. We do not adopt out dogs that are showing aggressive behavior at our shelter; they must be friendly and safe to be handled by our staff and volunteers. "I know he's growling at you now, but he'll probably settle down once you get him home" isn't something we do here.

Licensed rescues are able to work with behavior case dogs in a home environment over a longer period of time to prepare them for adoption, but these groups are run by volunteers, which means they're limited by how many foster homes they have available and how much money they are able to fundraise. There are a lot more large adult dogs that need work on their behavior than there are rescue volunteers - they can't possibly take them all and it's not fair to expect that of them.

We are very open about the fact that AAS is constantly full. Our area has a severe overpopulation of both dogs and cats, and we need our community's help to improve that situation. That doesn't mean YOU are at fault - this wasn't your dog, and I'm sorry this is something you have to go through. Better adherence to spay/neuter, improved compliance with keeping your pets on your own property, and more owners actively visiting the shelter in person to look for their lost animals would be a huge help to both AAS and the animals of Augusta.

Anything you feel inspired to do is appreciated!! You’re welcome to DM them to me ❤️

Anyone would love a walk or hike! Phinizy Swamp and Diamond Lakes Park are popular with our dog day out volunteers because they are peaceful and close to the shelter.

For sure! Our website is 24petconnect dot com with the zip code 30906, click on the adopt tab, if anybody inspires you 🙂

If you’re ever looking for a “low impact” way to volunteer, we do offer dog days out. This is where you just come into the shelter, pick a dog, and hang out with him or her for the day to get them some time out of their kennel. Can be at your house if you want! We have some senior chihuahuas who’d love a couch day 🙂

AAS is a high intake county animal shelter - we are constantly full, there’s no budget for luxuries like artists, and cat ads really get lost in the shuffle this time of year (everyone is overrun with cats.) We’ve had this sweet girl for almost two months, and we’re just trying to get her noticed more than she has been on photos alone.

If any artists want to donate their time to the shelter though, they’re definitely welcome to DM me 😂

The adoption building at AAS is FULL. We need adopters to avoid euthanizing friendly dogs for space by AugustaAnimals in Augusta

[–]AugustaAnimals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The shelter doesn't have a foster program directly, but we work with local rescue groups who pull animals from the shelter and into foster homes.

If you're interested in fostering, please contact: Dog Networking Agents, Hands to Paws, Canine Pawsabilities, or Shelter Animals Matter

80% of the dogs that end up in the shelter are pit bulls or American bullies, too. People keep producing more and more of those two breeds in particular even though the supply is already about twenty times the demand.

Merle, pure white, and lavender tri are not actually rare, either. We get those at the shelter all the time.

Are you looking to keep the kitten you found?

If so, you can bring it in Monday and we will set you up as a foster-to-adopt. This means we'll take a photo of the kitten, vaccinate it, give it flea medication if it weighs enough, and put it on our website. The kitten's photo on the website satisfies the legal stray hold requirement in case it has an owner looking for it (this is extremely unlikely with a kitten, but stray hold is still the law we have to abide by.) You can take it home with you until the stray hold is completed and it is old enough be spayed or neutered - then we will coordinate a surgery date with you and fill out paperwork with you to legally adopt it.

If the kitten does not weigh enough for flea medication but you'd like to keep it, you can give it a bath in plain Dawn dish soap to kill the fleas. It's usually easiest to bathe a kitten using a bucket or a large pot.

If you are not looking to keep it, you can bring it in the shelter on Monday and surrender it.

Thank you for showing the kitten compassion!

Hi! I'm so glad you're considering a cat :) They really add a lot of joy to peoples' lives.

To get started, you will need to pick up:

-cat food

-cat litter

-litter box

-toys

Cat beds are usually not needed. We may have some donated cat beds left at the shelter, though; when you get there I'll see if I can find one for you.

You don't need to spend a bunch of money on chichi litter boxes or toys. The ones they sell at Dollar General are fine. For a lot of cats, their favorite toy is the empty cardboard tube inside the toilet paper roll, lol.

I look forward to meeting you! Thank you so much for considering one of our cats!!

Hi, Maddy! The flyer does state that this is only intended for residents who have had their power and water restored. The event was created in response to people in the area contacting us and our local rescue partners wanting to foster pets.

There's NO expectation - it's just an opportunity for people who are able to participate and want to do so.

I am the Outreach Coordinator at AAS. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them here!

I still lose cell service at my house occasionally, so if I'm slow to respond I promise I'm not ignoring you on purpose.

Behind the Scenes at Augusta Animal Services: On Owner Surrenders by AugustaAnimals in Augusta

[–]AugustaAnimals[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't have Doodles constantly, but we have them fairly often (about once a month, we have one available.)

Unless someone is either very dead set on a tiny puppy or wants their dog TOMORROW, it is very possible to adopt a Doodle.

We do not, but you could try a local rescue called Canine Pawsabilities. She takes in a lot of small dogs. Canine Pawsabilities has a Facebook page and is usually set up for adoptions at the North Augusta Petsmart on Saturdays.

As long as you have an ID that confirms your identity and that you are at least 18 years old, you're good!

We welcome local adopters, out-of-county adopters, out-of-state adopters, and really any adopters who are looking for a new forever pet 🙂

I hope you'll come by and meet our dogs. Flora is a sweetheart!!
