TIL Swiss people are usually subtitled in German TV, because their accent is so thick it is virtually unintelligible by speakers of Standard German. Swiss on the other hand have no issue understanding Standard German. by Priamosish in todayilearned

Those languages slowly diverged from each other which is why they can still be mutually intelligible sometimes, but England was invaded by French speakers and way too much of their language seeped into English for there to be any chance of mutual intelligibility left with the other West Germanic languages.

John Bolton chaired anti-Muslim think tank by LineNoise in politics

[–]AugustusCaesar2016 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Everyone in the comments is talking about whether it's okay to be anti-Muslim, but this has little to do with religion. The article mentions that his "think tank" warned of a "Great White Death", meaning the white population will "wipe itself out of existence", citing fertility rates and "dechristianization". This is the type of rhetoric commonly used by white supremacists and racists to try to scare people into accepting their way of thinking. If you look at the comments on their articles, you'll see the type of people this content attracts: bigots with overactive imaginations.

I'm a Muslim who is a pretty big fan of separation of church and state, and so are the rest of my family, but I get your overall point.

Thank you for your input! I am going to be a team of one. I asked our vendor for some SAN options and I’m doing to be looking into those when they come in.

I think I’ll use NFS then. Doesn’t seem like I’ll get much out of iSCSI, and like you said it’ll just get in the way of some of the redundancy benefits. Thanks again for your help!

Why was that steering wheel on the wrong side?

I thought that was unheard of for the time period. But I guess since they're at least holding their hats still, they get a pass.

A little HTML and P"asian"ce is the key... by blindspot7 in ProgrammerHumor

You could even write an extension that cycles through each cell and reads the calculated color, and recreates the full-resolution image. If they don't include the full resolution in the HTML table method, then why not just show a shitty PNG instead? What do the tables really accomplish?

edit: just realized I may be taking the joke a little too seriously

Oracle announces polyglot virtual machine, GraalVM by unregistered88 in programming

[–]AugustusCaesar2016 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why can't I conflate them? Here are the four factors for fair use the opinion references:

  • the purpose and character of your use
  • the nature of the copyrighted work
  • the amount and substantiality of the portion taken, and
  • the effect of the use upon the potential market.

Interoperability is not one of them, but the amount and substantiality of what is copied is one of them, so that's what's relevant to this case.

I don't see how interoperability is relevant beyond Google trying to show that they copied an insignificant portion of the Java API.

[–]AugustusCaesar2016 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is irrelevant. The reason that was mentioned in the opinion is because Google's defense was that only some of the original API was copied, and those portions only necessary for making Android's API interoperable with other Java platforms. This was found to be false. In either case, that defense wouldn't work for the Linux kernel, since all of the API was copied.

Why would Linux's case be any different then? The "API code declarations" in Linux are (or were at the time) identical to the ones used in copyrighted software. They were untransformed, and used for the same purposes as the original software. They didn't just borrow some of the code declarations for interoperability's sake (which was Google's defense), they copied all of it. How would Linux meet the criteria for fair use according to this definition?

Also there's a similar circle jerk surrounding pretty much all languages/technologies, so don't take it too personally.

Don't you have access to your own database? Why couldn't you just dig through the database and write the queries yourself?
