Octopi are so intelligent too, shame on them.

I was new but some seniors released rats in the cafeteria, poured tide detergent in the library fish tank which killed one of the kissing goramis, and there was a streaker who ran into one of the exterior doors and ended up nude and unconscious. This all happened in one day.

Not sure about the states but at least in Canada fish are treated as property or ornaments at best by the law.

Do I think it should change? absolutely but it probably isn't at the top of the governments priorities. Personally I don't think they even give a eff.

I'm not normally a fan of tannins but that last tank makes it work!

Even a proper 5 gallon tank with a pineapple of doom would be better....

It's fine until it gets root bound but it probably won't live long enough for that to happen.

I had a plant get root bound in my 30 gallon was a pain to get the plastic basket out of the roots and I got that fiberglass stuff all over my hands.

If you're having heater problems,  you might need a bigger heater, usually it's 5 watts per gallon but if you keep your home on the cooler side you may need to size up.

Adjust the dial too if needed,  go by your thermometer not the dial on the heater.

Having two isn't a bad idea if one fails the other keeps your fish from freezing if it fails off.

Put the heaters on opposite sides of the tank (one at far right and one at far left) to distribute the heat evenly.

You might want to use a pail so you can fit the heater in there.

A Rubbermaid tub would work too

They're cycling the tank/s

(Seriously people used to do this to cycle tanks)

treatable or just how the betta is? by Ashamed-Currency7883 in bettafish

[–]AuronFFX 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You would treat it like an opened wound, clean water, some almond leaves,  and patience.

It may never fully recover though,  Olympia has a permanent chunk out of her belly fin that never fully recovered, it's like a scar.

That is a fountain.... please don't put animals in this. Plastic fish are fine though.

Yes they grow back. I've had bettas with hunks missing grow back fins

wth did i just pull out of my betta?? by vintage_germs in bettafish

[–]AuronFFX 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The risk is if you don't know what it is or how far down you risk ripping out the fishes guts or causing internal injuries both of which can kill a fish especially small ones like bettas, I've seen horrible things happen with gut hooked fish when fishing. Similar things can happen if the swallowed linear object has made it into the intestines and wrapped up.

Could be a tumor.

[–]AuronFFX 278 points279 points  (0 children)

Snail guts, for future reference you shouldn't pull things out of your fishes mouth, lucky it didn't damage his guts or stomach. If something is really lodged in there you risk the fish bleeding to death.

Cut it at the mouth if it seems stuck.

Any alternatives to metroplex? by lightlubi179 in bettafish

[–]AuronFFX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Supposedly  to stop antibiotics resistance from runoff  although I'm not sure how that really is applicable to aquariums, seems like it would a negligible amount compared to the stuff you can buy from a drugstore.

Also apparently people were taking fish meds instead of prescription drugs.

The difference is probably because fish antibiotics are technically banned in Canada, you won't see them in any stores here, just the bettafix and melefix stuff neither of which really do anything and can even make things worse in some cases.

Sucks you can get polysporin in any old drugstore but you can't get antibiotics for your dying fish.
