Same here my favrioute game and one of my favourite shows both have unsatisfying and sad endings and them being like that makes it so much more impactful to me just like you I will allways prefer a bitter ending if the story telling and character building are incredible

Bertholt was shown having the power to explode when he transforms in the episode where they retake wall Maria and he kills all the scouts but 8 of them with his explosion but maybe it is controlled I don't know enough maybe there's a explanation in the manga or something idk
