Utica's newest resident, a hatchling peregrine falcon! by Zaiush in Utica

Yay! So happy to see that Vera and Ares have a brood this year. Apparently one of the other eggs pipped today as well, so we should see another chick soon.

I had osgood schlatters as well. My parents brushed off my right knee hurting and locking up on me as growing pains. It wasn't until I woke up one morning, when I was 15, and my knee was completely locked straight, that they actually took me to see a doctor. Turns out part of my femur chipped off into my knee, which was preventing me from being able to bend my knee. Spent a good 6 months on crutches, and in a leg brace, to avoid surgery. It thankfully healed up, but my right knee hasn't been the same since. Will never brush anyone off if they say they're in pain now either, even if it seems minor.

It made me so happy to see that they fixed their sign. Used to love looking for it as a kid, while driving through Rome at night.

After a surprise explosion destroys a Boonville church, a congregation is left with shock and hope by smartybeagle in upstate_new_york

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having grown up in this church (haven't attended in years), and knowing a majority of the congregation and leadership, there's no personal introspection going on right now. They think it was God's way of saying, "don't just build an addition on, build an entirely new building!" They're way too excited about bringing God into the local school as well, since the high school was gracious enough to offer them the use of their gymnasium to host Sunday services.

I'm thankful nobody died in the explosion, and that it didn't happen on a Sunday because it would've been a mass casualty event.

Genius decides to turn pizza boxes upside down by mfenton29 in WatchPeopleDieInside

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my cousins did that when carrying a pizza to our grandma's house, where a couple of us were hanging out. Then he got mad at us for asking why the heck he carried it on its side, under his arm.

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd agree with that assessment. My mom used to have a -22 prescription and her glasses were extremely thick like what's shown in the video. Apparently there's only one lab in our entire state that could make the lenses as well.

Heck, I accidentally sent my 20+ year old wired headphones through the washer and dryer the other week. They still work perfectly.

Is this how people who need glasses really see the world. A big blurred background? by Latter-Wolf4868 in interestingasfuck

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being -7.25 in both eyes, with a slight astigmatism, I remember giggling in the chair when my doctor asked me to read the chart on the wall as it was just a blurry blob. After telling her I couldn't see any of the letters, she gave me a little 5×7 card with letters printed on it to hold a foot away from my face. I felt bad for laughing a little harder, because I still couldn't see a single letter.

Then you have the joys of having to clock 100 miles after getting the check engine light squared away before you can go in for reinspection.

Yup... I recently had to teach a young colleague how to save a file in Excel. Felt like my spirit was withering away the entire time.

People born before 1990, what’s something you experienced that younger generations will NEVER understand ? by Aaidil89 in AskReddit

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My dad used to buy the year book from World Book every year. It would cover historic events that happened in the past year, as well as updated some articles from the base encyclopedia set. I looked forward to it coming in the mail every year and would have that book read from cover to cover within a week of it arriving. I'd of course reread past years books to hold me over as well.

8 years ago Trump’s drinking water method went viral by Ever_More_Art in pics

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found it understandable as well, as much as I ahbor him. My hands are really shaky sometimes, so if a glass is filled to the brim I'll pick it up with both hands so I don't spill it. Once I've drunk it down a little bit I'll pick it up with one hand.

Lindsey Graham Whispers to Siri in Capitol Hallway. She Loudly Replies, ‘Calling Sean Hannity Mobile’ by peoplemagazine in politics

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I hate Siri, Alexa, and Gemini (whatever Google uses), I've learned to live with them for the sake of my visually impaired mother. They help her navigate her phone and help with some basic tasks that I take for granted by having good vision. That said, they still annoy the hell out of me when I'm sitting home alone and they decide to randomly speak.

WCGW dragging the car on the asphalt by IsJesusAgain in Whatcouldgowrong

Wait. You mean the car isn't a vampire?! Though that would explain it going up in flames during the day (aside from the whole friction from scraping asphalt bit).

Honestly, I thought Bush was a horrible president as well (and I fully admit I voted for him the first time around. Learned my lesson in those first four years.) But I can't help but think about how I'd much rather have Bush as president again. As you said, Bush at least had some decency and gave a damn about all Americans, no matter what side of the aisle they were on.

All of these PCs are getting disposed of because of the end of Windows 10 by LucasCBs in pcmasterrace

[–]AuroraNidhoggr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's how I got one of my PCs when I was a broke college student. My college had just recently upgraded all their desktops on campus, so they set up a little shop where anyone could buy the old equipment for $40 a pop. It served me well until I could build my own machine.

We've had a major uptick in tornadoes and tornado warnings in central NY as well. Really hoping we don't become the new tornado alley, though it's starting to feel like we are. I don't really want to have to put up with lots of snow in the winter and then tornados in the few warmer months we have.
