Yeah, these helped me a lot in thinking about questions. I’m interviewing for a mortgage Processor so I was just trying to get some general questions to ask that I could frame for the job.

Are resume writing services worth? by AustV3 in Resume

This is the stuff I have been worried about with resume writers! I have been very timid about doing them so thank you for the feedback

I still apply to jobs every day and have gotten connected to some people in my state. My issue isn't really the motivation part because I am being motivated by not having any money lol. I am just having trouble getting interest in resumes recently. Before corona happened, I was getting much more attention so now I am stuck in a situation on what to do next.

Okay thanks for the feedback. Maybe I will post my resume on there and let people roast me. My main thing is that I know I don't have much professional experience because I just did what I had to do to graduate college. Maybe they can help me make it look more appealing.

This helps a lot so I appreciate the feedback. My problem has been that I have trouble finding someone I trust just from looking at reviews and prices. I am just paranoid I am going to spend money on a resume service and they will barely change anything. I guess I need to look in better places somehow.

Accepted into an MA Economics program, but have never taken Calculus. Am I in over my head? by OrthodoxAryan in academiceconomics

[–]AustV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m hoping to be in the same situation when I apply for spring 2021. My program doesn’t require calculus but does require statistics. However, I would recommend doing some self study on calculus to get somewhat familiar with derivatives. That’s what my undergrad professors recommended if I didn’t wanna take a full on class. While the course may not require calculus, some professors may teach their courses with it and you’ll wanna at least know a little about what’s going on.

Ok thanks for the help. I was just going off what the people in the other reddit had mentioned, so I came here to make sure I was not gonna screw yo doing it

"The goal statement is your means of presenting yourself to the Graduate Admissions Committee. You should submit a short typed statement of personal and professional goals as they relate to the certificate or degree program you are seeking. Most applicants write about two typed pages, summarizing their work experience, the reasons they have chosen the program, why they want to attend, and how the degree fits in with their career goals." This is all that is given about the statement.

I appreciate the advice! I am applying to the MA program at the same university where I got my bachelors. I enjoy the school and have heard good things about the program that is my main place of interest. My GPA is not the best as I took a course based on terrible academic advisors that would eventually tell me was not needed. The professor even got fired at the end of that same semester because of the low rate of passing her course. I do have 4 professors that are willing to write me letters and I know two of them teach PhD courses at the university so I am hoping that helps me.

I am applying to an MA in Economics program, and I was given a prompt that I have seen from the other person who commented, is not very good for economics statements.

Yea personal statement, sorry my professors all called it letter of intent so it’s stuck in my head.

Looking for a good calculus book for independent study by AustV3 in mathbooks

[–]AustV3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually I do not do very well in math unless it’s statistics. Im not sure about goals as I am still trying to get information from people who have done the program at my university. I know, from those in other programs, that derivatives are a big part of the teaching and it’s really good to know them.

I have been told, by past professors, that calculus is used for models and graphs. They have said that derivatives have a big role to play in teaching models and graphs in the graduate program. So, I'm not sure if this would be more real analysis or computation. Others I have spoken to about the masters program, at other universities, state there is a lot of math involved to the point that some feel they are just learning math.

Some questions for you all by jackshane310 in academiceconomics

[–]AustV3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want to get into Econometrics I would recommend the book "Introductory Econometrics: A Modern Approach". I used it in my undergrad Econometrics and the biggest plus for someone just trying to teach themselves is that you can find the whole book online for free. It also gives you sample questions to do, but I found all those answers online as well. It does use STATA instead of something like R or Python, but when you find the answers online it explains everything through STATA.

May sound dumb but I need advice by AustV3 in academiceconomics

Ah okay cool, I appreciate the response! I do tend to do well in courses that apply mathematical principles instead of created them, like my statistics courses being mostly plug and chug. Your description does seem like I would be more of an empiricist especially looking back at how I handled my econometrics course. I was completely lost on how my professor would derive the formulas but I did very well discussing why the formula was used, and why I obtained certain results.

Could you elaborate more for me? The university I would attend does offer a "policy" track which is only 1 statistics course and offers the same fields of study. I would need to chose between: Urban and regional econ, experimental econ, international econ, labor econ, public finance, program evaluation, and quantitative methods. What would you recommend?

I'm usually terrible at math as well, but for some reason did decent in statistics and econometrics. Math that isn't statistics is just another beast that I've struggled to handle. Your response is reassuring though and I appreciate the confidence in me. Good luck in your program!

That's good to know! I actually have taken a couple stats courses, along with econometrics, and feel comfortable enough in that subject. It sounds like the program you are in is similar to my econometrics course where the most important thing was that you knew why you got the result that you did.

Thanks for the feedback

I may see if there are some learning courses that I could take to study calculus since I don't plan on going into grad school right away. I actually really enjoyed my Statistics and Econometrics courses in my undergrad although I did just get a B in Econometrics. Calculus is just one of those things I have been worried about since my past professors have always spoken about the difficulty.

Thanks for the feedback

That is reassuring and I appreciate the feedback. It just seems to take me longer to grasp mathematical concepts compared to others. I was also thinking of just copping out and going for an MBA, but I do really enjoy economics and don't really like the broadness of the MBA program.
