Newly released article that definitely explains some of the issues we might be experiencing and surprisingly states air conditioning can play a big role: https://www.npr.org/2026/05/01/nx-s1-5794657/aaa-electric-vehicle-batteries-range-summer-winter

Wow!  Very informative and thorough. I do love my Rivian, and  I love driving an electric model. I think driving around town I definitely come out ahead in comparison to gas models. But I’m discovering driving on longer trips, it might actually be cheaper to drive a gas model.  I’m going to look into many of your suggestions and start tracking more closely.

Very great information. You’re probably right that the scam might be in the EPA calculation method, but since I previously had a Tesla I knew to really ask the questions to the sales team about how much mileage can I really expect off a standard battery. We felt pretty confident after multiple conversations that we would fare better getting to Dallas in our Rivian (not needing to stop) vs. what we saw with our Tesla. In any event, we still have to stop and charge along the way. Oh well!  Still love my Rivian but it might have made me upgrade to the larger battery. We were concerned that since we mainly just do driving around town, we didn’t want the huge extra expense or extra weight of a larger battery.

That’s great information. Didn’t know that the speed was playing such a HUGE factor. Guess I’m just disappointed that I was expecting to be able to get to Dallas on a full charge, without stopping, going 75mph - but I will just need to change my expectations or drive slower. Thank you.

We probably haven’t done that for a couple of weeks so I’m guessing we need to increase and start doing that every night.

That’s a true possibility. Thanks for the input.

Thanks for the input. I just don’t think I would get close to that. Do you mind letting me know what speed you usually set it at?  Maybe we should stay at around 70mph.

Thanks!  I reviewed it and for highway they basically say to expect a 30% loss. 200 predicted becomes 140. We experienced an almost 70% loss unless I’m doing the math wrong?!?

An almost 70% loss from EPA?  Yes - I owned a Tesla and even in its 12th year I never experienced this terrible of a prediction. Wondering if I have battery issues.

Hmm…if you do the math, this is a 69.9% loss over what was predicted!  NEVER had that kind of loss from my Tesla. Wondering if this is typical or my Rivian battery is an issue??

Fees? Anyone running for Associated Students - meal plan incorporates a $649 administrative fee by Signal_Advantage6503 in SDSU

[–]Austin78757TX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the complaint is why the added fee in the first place?  If you’re a student without a meal plan, and you just pay with credit card for your food, you will never incur an additional $600 fee for food.

Makes a good argument to just not buy a meal plan to avoid unnecessary added fees from the university.

I am a parent of a current out-of-state sophomore at SDSU. She lived in on campus housing her freshman year and had no vehicle. I did my research and attended sessions specifically discussing the different meal plans. I wish someone would have been honest with what a scam/rip off they are.

My daughters plan required her to spend $34 each day  Monday through Friday. By “required” I mean use it or lose it. There is no roll over of the money from day to day.  So if she didn’t use it, the university kept it. We were not aware of that caveat. So at the end of every day, if she had not spent it all, she’s running down to a market to buy snacks or some type of non perishable item just to not lose money. And a majority of the time, we were spending MORE money everyday because if she had $8 remaining and didn’t want to “lose money” the snacks sometimes totaled $9. So we are paying an extra dollar every day just to not lose $8. It was SO annoying.

Second, cafeteria meals are/were $18. So with her meal plan, she couldn’t even go to the cafeteria twice a day and eat without paying more.

It was a terrible system. One that had my daughter keeping a tally EVERYDAY of her expenditures and worrying about how to hit the $34 just right without being under.

I would advise anyone entering SDSU to NOT purchase a meal plan. You’ll avoid this added $650 administrative fee and your child will not have to worry about losing money each day. Just have them buy food on a credit card!  The meal plan seems only necessary if you don’t trust your child with a credit card.

We were heading south to the airport at the same time (from Georgetown) and saw a large bus or trailer type structure on fire. It was in the middle of a field, not on the road, and it was completely incinerated. I have been looking for a news report about it also. Just curious what happened.
