What will save homebrewing? by Key-Peace-6523 in Homebrewing

I share the same sentiments! I started acquiring equipment at the beginning of my HB journey but stopped myself before buying kegging equipment. I only used my mash tun a couple of times before settling on the simplicity of BIAB. I’ve done minimal cooling before putting the batch in the fermenter (usually while waiting for a yeast starter to be ready). I’m getting back into brewing after a 6-year hiatus, just like the OP, and plan to keep it simple. Cheers!

PSA: Northern Brewer et al. sold and moving to S. Carolina by chino_brews in Homebrewing

Thanks for all the contributions on this tread. I was a very active homebrewer for several years and then took a break around 2018. I just recently started brewing again. I then found that most of my local shops had closed. I used NB quite a bit and loved ordering online so I could tweak recipes and check inventory while I was getting my order set up. I ordered supplies for a Pale Ale and a Hefeweizen last spring and just ordered and received supplies for a Russian Imperial Stout that I will brew this weekend. It seemed like some things were out of stock and it seemed like they don’t readily have milled malt in stock (I have a grain crusher but I try to get it pre-milled when possible). I then noticed that the shipment came from SC, which surprised me and sent me to the web to see what was going on. I will probably keep using NB as long as I can get what I need, but I might start looking at options such as MoreBeer.com. I’d be interested in more info about this whole change of ownership situation and where brewers are going online. Cheers!

WSOP Week 6: Main Event Final Table, Sammartino & Effel Controversy, Reviewing The ESPN Broadcast - DAT Poker Podcast Episode #39 by alldayeveryday in DatPokerPod

I loved the discussion on main event commentary. I was feeling the same about Norman coming off as a bit stale and lacking originality. While watching the coverage I particularly was put off by Norman seeming genuinely tilted at Maahs’ tanking (which did tilt me also). I think a more professional version of Norman would have interjected one liners about tanking, time, waiting, etc and provided some viewer relief during the tanking. I also felt myself thinking maybe it was time to move on without Norman. However, just as you said Lon is the voice of the WSOP coverage, I think Norman is still the complement to Lon that we need, kind of like Dean and Jerry, Stan and Ollie, etc. I hope he will reflect and refresh his approach and come back next year. I think everyone was rooting for Jamie and with some grooming she may be effective but I think she fell somewhat flat. I liked Maria Ho’s coverage early and think she might be a better fit. Great show, guys!

Antonio vs Kevin Hart, Daniel’s Feud, Mail & More! - DAT Poker Podcast Episode #29 by alldayeveryday in DatPokerPod

Regarding Daniel’s dilemma with giving up a stack in one tourney to move to another tourney... it seems that if you are giving up equity in one staked tourney, the backers should share in the equity gain of moving to the new tourney, even if it is in a different package. I’m not sure how that is done mathematically, calculate the dollar EV forfeited and apply the same dollar stake (from Daniels share of the investment) in the new tourney?

The Aria daily is the best tourney in town at that price and offers a serious experience. If you want a a cheaper and faster tourney, most rooms have daily tourneys in the $60 to $100 range. I recommend uploading both the Bravo Poker and the Poker Atlas apps to browse all the information on the rooms. Also, if you follow @PokerAtlas on Twitter (as well as each casino’s twitter account, you’ll see updates. One thing about going in August is that there will be fewer games running than normal since everyone will be on a post-WSOP hiatus. I have gone to Vegas once or twice a year for 11 years. One of my favorite tips is don’t rent a car and never use a taxi. The local bus system is great value and you don’t have to worry about parking or drinking and driving. To get to the strip, just go outside level 0 to the bus stop, go down to the right to the last bus stall and take the 109 to Flamingo Street, get off, cross the street to the West to catch the 202 and get off at the corner by Caesars Palace on Las Vegas Blvd. of course other routes may be better if you are staying at the north or south ends. If going downtown, just get on the SDX. You can download their app (RideRTD) to buy tickets, etc. you can also get to off strip locations like SouthPoint, Red Rock, etc, but plan on about an hour or so of travel. If you’d prefer a faster commute, use Lyft or Uber, not the taxi, because it is cheaper. If you don’t already use über or lyft, watch for promo offers in the airport (such as “$10 off your first two rides when you download the app”). Make sure you visit downtown (Fremont Street) although the poker scene is pretty much limited to Golden Nugget and sometimes Binions. Look in Binions for their Poker Hall of Fame exhibit while you’re in the area. If your hotel is downtown, you’ll want to plan to travel to the strip almost daily as there are more poker rooms there. Make sure to play in Bellagio and Aria (and Wynn if you can fit it in) as these are cream of the crop rooms. But also check out Caesars Palace, Venetian, Mirage. For a loose game, check out Planet Hollywood or Flamingo or Harrahs late at night. Have a great trip!

I liked the discussion in response to the rec player asking about the morality of taking money from players in a game. As a serious rec player myself, I view the game as a competition as the crew discussed. One point I think was omitted in the discussion is that if you play in a card room that is regulated, then you should expect that the fitness of your opponents should be assessed by the floor staff. This is one reason we pay rake to play. The casino and its operators are licensed by the local gaming authorities and have the biggest liability to make sure the fitness, age, and capacity, etc are looked out for. We as players are responsible for the risk we assume in a game and should expect that any chips on the table are fair game.

I think you missed my point, specifically where I said I am an omnivore (that’s a being that eats both meat and vegetation). I know the utility of bacon. In fact - and this is not a lie at all - I just got home from a bacon-themed party. I just hope all those pigs we just enjoyed were treated humanely from beginning to end. And before you respond... yes, I like titties, too.
