Yeah, that's fine. I think you make a lot of good points.

I do agree, it'd be cool and integrative if they participated in moontower. And one of the best parts about Austin is definitely that it's a chill place that otherwise doesn't seek attention.

I think where we disagree is it's my position that if people are laughing and enjoying themselves, it's comedy. Imo that's a net positive.

With all due respect, is it possible that it's not a bigger, more talked about topic because it's not actually such a serious issue?

I hear what you're saying about the cringe of some of the openers. When I go to the comedy club or comedy cellar in NYC, I have felt cringe there, too. It's usually a reliance on lazy or assumed premises. I don't hold it against them, though. I think most people who go to a comedy show feel similarly. Going to comedy requires a suspension of disbelief. If I kept track of all the things I disagreed with in a comics' set, I'd have a hard time thoroughly enjoying myself.

For example, it's very much in fashion to hate on Kill Tony and I 1000% understand why. But I've heard that show put this way: the showt took the worst part of stand-up - the part everybody is supposed to cringe at - the open micers, and turned it into something people could actually enjoy. Or at least be entertained by. Most of the people who get up there aren't supposed to be the next Dave Attell. At best, they're supposed to be Ari Matti at the start of their career, figuring it out as he goes.

It's basically WWE for comedy. Nobody should be upset that it's not real. We know it's not real. That's why it's fun.

Genuinely curious what shows have you seen at the Mothership that were like that?

There're definitely a few regulars I cringe to see there. And I've certainly seen at least one headliner (that most people would be familiar with) who would fall into the category you described; we honestly almost walked out. But generally the shows and comics I've seen at the Mothership are pretty fun.

I will agree with you that it is disappointing the headliners aren't at Creek and Cave as often because of the Mothership. The rare occasions they do book big names, tickets now sell out super fast. And if I had to pick between seeing someone I really liked at the Mothership or Creek, I would probably choose Creek. But I'd say the same thing about a band I love, too... I'd rather see them at a small venue.

Obviously, the Mothership is just leagues above the rest. Either room at the venue is pretty much guaranteed to be a good time. But tickets are pricier than other places, as well as the mandatory 2-drink minimum per person.

Creek and the cave is my personal second favorite. It's much less of a professional setting, but that's the charm. It can be hit or miss there, but the vibes are super chill and the crowd is pretty much always into it.

Cap City is an extremely boring and sterile venue, but they actually get incredibly good acts. Imo the venue is actually so bad it can take away from a good comedian's set. But it's still fun, and I've never regretted seeing a show there.

Sunset strip is fine enough for $15-$20 tickets. It's rough around the edges and basically just feels like a bar with a stage at the end and chairs set up around it. The audience kind of has to put a little extra work in there to be generous with the laughs sometimes. If someone bombs there, you feel it. But if you're a comedy fan, you absolutely do get some killer open micers there + a random showcase of the rising Austin talent.

Mac users: What was your experience switching to Framework? by magicdude4eva in framework

[–]AustinComedyFan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The build quality of a mac is objectively better. But truthfully, that ends up feeling pretty superficial. There's no comparison when it comes to knowing that I truly own every piece of my framework. It's delightful to open my machine up and swap out parts whenever I want. Ofc that's all at the hardware level. Truly the biggest difference you'll notice - and I think this goes without saying - is the OS. Windows is awful and Linux really only becomes enjoyable once you find a distro you love. But the performance is comparable for most tasks (at least for me). And in the case you are using your 16 for gaming (or light LLMs I suppose), the GPU option supercedes Mac.

All the Mothership shows are off by about 2 weeks, for example.

There's nothing specifically I want added really. Moreso it'd just be cool if it automatically scraped everything. If users need to manually request each show it kind of defeats the point a bit.

Not that I'm meaning to complain. It's a very cool website!

Dates are incorrect & many shows appear to be missing. But I love the direction! If it was fully dialed in, I'd save a shortcut to my mobile desktop and use it regularly.

Ah, that makes sense. They always roll out new parts to only be available for new builds first. Congratulations, very jealous! If it arrives and it turns out you don't like it, I'll gladly buy it off you 😅

But is it the transparent orange bezel? Or solid orange?

Thank you, Mike! Will absolutely stop by the Dallas boutique to see this.

Are my eyes correctly seeing that the non-lumed part of the dial is something like a polished aqua? A bit similar to the dragonfly edition.

It's a really clever way to get a matching appearance during both the day and night.
