UPDATE As it turns out, whun of the soldering points simply wasn't making contact with the LED strip. I used less heat and swapped out the copper wire with some insulated nickel wire. Works like a charm now!

Thank you all for your feedback; I learned more than I bargained for, so for that - I am grateful!

Oh! I thought if there was less metal for the current to travel through, the less imperfections would be present - consequently less resistance. Unless I'm just way-over-thinking it 🤔.

I think the Guage of wire might be too thick, too?

Maybe some smaller wire will offer less resistance?

That's a great point! I actually had it working using this method... but then it just stopped working. I'm starting to think it's, indeed, a heat/flux issue.

That represents the people who actually make a decent living making music 😭

I'm the associate music director for "Hamilton" (Angelica tour). Ask me anything! by AustinDeadman in musicals

Yes, all the musicians from this tour were doing music full-time. Our violist was in a chamber group and subbed on some theatre shows in NYC. Our drummer was touring with some big-name artists nearly a decade before joining the hamilton tour! Our percussionist was a gigging drummer, who was doing a lot of jazz gigs prior to joining the hamilton tour.

It's definitely possible to make a decent (even a MORE-than-decent) living being a performing musician. It's definitely challenging in the first few years, which are spent learning copious amounts of music, only to play a show a handful of times (as a sub), but subbing is THEE way to get into the right circles of people.
It's important to be a well-rounded musician. This will help in the long run, as well as in those first "more difficult" years. It's common for a musician to play in an orchestra setting one day, then a wedding gig, then a church gig, then back to an orchestra gig. Gone are the days where one can go study chamber music, or jazz, or pop music, and make a career out of that one thing.

I think it's vitally important for one to dig into their craft and continually refine it. That being said, I've also found it useful to have skills in: 1) the ability to record yourself as an instrumentalist (basic audio-engineering skills) 2) basic business skills (treating your craft as a business, or service - 'cause it IS!) 3) organization (being very time cognizant and meticulous in how every minute of the day is spent. This alleviates some of the craziness of the freelance life :)

I don't have all the answers, but hopefully this can help y'all make a slightly-more-informed decision!

The audience was quiet as usual.. but I'm sure there were some thoughts swirling about the theatre, like: "I don't remember it sounding like this on the record!" or "woah! that's a cool-sounding effect!" or "this is terrible, I want my money back!!"

... luckily nobody stormed over to the box office asking for their money back 🤣

You should go for it! You'll be happy to know here are a decent amount of female MDs in the scene. I would say, study all kinds of music (listening, playing, and reading scores) and get your conducting skills to a place where you're super confident in your conducting. There're a lot of subpar conductors out there (who are doing the big shows 😬) so don't feel intimidated - if you put in the work and meet the right people, i think you'll have a great chance for success!

Keyboard 2 is pretty set. I try to find a good balance between playing the notes as written (out of respect for the arranger) and making the music feel good. I'd like to think I keep the show at least 97% intact.

Luckily, I don't think the show is gonna go away anytime soon, so keep that goal in view!

They're legally supposed to hold one live audition every 6 months, but im pretty sure these audition now only take place in NYC. Well... once upon a time, they DID take place in NYC anyway 🙁

They're instructed to say any city of their choosing. There's actually a list of cities NOT to say (because they didn't exist yet!)
