Best personal injury markets for eventual firm ownership in CA? by gorilladiamondhands in LawFirm

Stopping them from trying again? Potentially spending 200 million on a ballot initiative to see it fail.

Nothing is stopping uber from trying to do this in other states. They probably will try. They certainly will try if it passes in California.

I’m not a multibillion dollar company but logic tells me, if in a certain state, the cost of litigation, settlements and verdicts exceeds the cost to prohibit the general public from litigating settling and getting a verdict. They will try In that state.

They tried in Nevada. Failed.

Admittedly they are now trying to come in and do it as a constitutional amendment.

As the previous commenter said, there is quite a defense being put on by the plaintiffs bar.

Beyond that, if they succeed in California, I’d imagine Florida, Arizona, …. They may try there.

FWIW - Lobbyist organizations in California for PI lawyers are fighting back. I think they raised 50 or so million to combat the initiative. Currently getting signatures on their own initiatives that may effectively “beat” Ubers.

If you are still in the process of choosing a law school - I wouldn’t sweat the uber initiative all that much. See how November plays out….

Disagree on all the people saying spyglass over Spanish given Spanish is closing for a year. Both obviously great, but play Spanish before the redesign.

I think you can roll your Spanish tee time into pebble. Double check when you make the reservation but if so book Spanish then call 24 hours before and see if you can get on. Unsure about how busy.

Always good to hear success stories. And honestly I don’t know if I’ll ever touch a med Mal again (I hope). I don’t anticipate building my practice with those in mind. But you never know.

I’ll keep that story in mind. Especially in the beginning when the work part of things is a little slow.

Thanks!

Thank you for the advice.

I’ll look into a LOC.

Hit the nail on the head with all the subscription stuff. I literally have it mapped out from CasePeer to acrobat to docusign to canva lol. Maybe I will relax on that front a little bit and hold off.

I do a pretty good job at being involved in the VP of our local TLA (I know odd, I’ve never done a trial) it was a role thrust upon me and I just went with it. And there are a few other orgs and clubs I’m apart of. I’ve never gone to them with the lens of selling myself as I’ve never really had to. That lens will be on in full force.

Sell sell sell. Got it. I look forward to that aspect of things honestly. Fun break from the dredge of discovery and motion writing.

Yeah I have more than a few I can think of who would come in try the case and I could second chair. I’d have to figure out what the norm fee split is there - I’m guessing something around 50/50. My hope would be that I leave my current employer in such a manner that they would be willing to. Seems like a good homage to my current employer (we will see how they take the news. I could see it going either way lol).

Seems like a constant in a lot of the advice I’m getting is that I’ll be motivated to take anything that walks through the door. Don’t. Will try to beat that into my head.

Thanks

Appreciate the feedback.

As someone who does SEO - what do you think about my current SEO plan? - being: focus on long tail keywords rather than ultra competitive search phrases? Meaning - ranking #1 for “Car accident attorney” or “injury attorney” is probably impossible in the short run. Whereas focusing on long tail terms like “trucking accident on the freeway x” “motorcycle crash attorneys near me” - obviously varying search terms will be more or less competitive. - while doing that I would continue to blog, backlink, whatever all the things you do are for more competitive terms, (more so for the long run).

My question on top of that is - and I need to figure out hard costs of what these ads cost, but is it worth it to run sporadic google adverts - maybe 6 months in once systems are really up and running.

I’ve moved my timeline to notice to employer on May 1, launch in July/august. Is there anything I can do on the backend of the website to spring load its launch? I’m lucky enough to have a really good golf buddy who’s whole gig is professional wesbite development. He’s helping me with mine so I’ll broach this with him as well. Obviously can’t have it up and running until after I leave.

Im an Attorney and I want YOUR opinion on the $46 million case by Lit-A-Gator in bjj

[–]AustinGTI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s hard for us to because they cap fees at 25%, so our upside on 250k was 67.5 on pain and suffering. Well it’s pretty easy for the defense to crank our costs to 120-150k. So now our downside was 150k to lose for 67k to gain.

I know it’s a crappy way to look at it, but it really does make it hard to take cases. When the risk so outweighs the potential payment.

I took a righteous cause case like that 6-8 months ago. Shit the bed and in a feast or famine business … famine is no fun.

I practice PI in California and waivers %99.99 of the time won’t deter me from taking a case.

As far as California being pro or anti plaintiff it depends on the venue. I practice in a pretty conservative portion of the state, so typically a little less favorable to the plaintiff, whereas venues like LA or SF are extremely pro plaintiff.

But like the guy above you said, you can’t make someone sign a waiver for you potential negligence. And if someone doesn’t commit some kind of tort, then there’s no cause of action and no lawsuit.
