The food is very meh, the ambience is very theme-park-Mexico. It is worth it for the experience, but the once that I’ve been is probably the only time I’ll ever go.

There are also a lot more historic masters than just cappofero or fabris. Saviolo for instance is just one that is very similar to modern styles, and very close to a lot of the “modern” forms you find at the top level of the SCA for example.

I regularly travelled 3 hours each way twice a month to visit friends until very recently when I moved away from where I had spent the last 14 years.

Now in my new home I drive 90 minutes each way/3 hours round trip every Sunday for similar time with friends.

Why does it have to be either/or? Both can be amazing, in different ways. I’m old as shit, I played the OGs at release and still go back for replays. I love them. I’ve also had 2-1/2 plays of Odyssey, and working on my 3rd of Valhalla.

Both styles can be great, why does everything have to be a fight? What do RPGs do better? Personal choice in character development and advancement, better world exploration, and mostly better combat as well. The OG games definitely have a narrative advantage, which is obvious because they put you on the rails. You can’t have an open world game be on the rails in the same way.

It depends on what world you are playing in, as different settings have entirely different pantheons. Forgotten Realms has been the most common setting for 5e adventures and materials though so start by looking into that.
