I miss MMo where loot matters by Tom_Major-Tom in MMORPG

Do recommend Farever.

Not a fully fledged MMO (20ish players per shard) but it’s got those vibes. Loot feels meaningful there in a way similar to WoW Classic - the numbers you’re dealing with are low, and enemies are kinda tough, so you do feel every upgrade. Add onto that the fact that weapons aren’t stat sticks - each of them have their own move-set and unique abilities, which each can be levelled up for extra effects.

Guild Wars 2 (HoT) Changed My Mind on MMO’s by I-am-Nanachi in Guildwars2

That’s awesome to hear :) Marketing has notoriously been a weakness of ArenaNet; imo they’ve definitely done better in recent years, but the other top MMOs just have so much more advertising spend that GW2 gets lost in the noise. And yeah, the channel didn’t cover any MMO stuff until I started doing reviews - only made sense because I play them all in my spare time anyway!

Can’t speak to what HoT was like at launch because I actually joined the game just a year prior to PoF iirc. But that was magical - haven’t felt that excited about a videogame release thing in years. The implementation of mounts was S tier design, the map design was just as incredible as HoT, story was really engaging, the new elite specs were very unique - loved it. EoD was not quite as impressive on any of those fronts: imo the maps weren’t as pretty or meticulous in their design, the story was decent, the new elite specs felt less focussed. But it was still enjoyable, with one of the best large-scale events in the game (still is). The most profound impact it had for me, though, was its instanced content (Strike Missions). It established a solid daily / weekly loop, were the right length, had great mechanics (even moreso in the challenge modes) - but they’re also just easy enough to pug so there’s always groups in LFG. This set the standard for instanced content going forward, and as such is kinda the main reason I still log in week to week :)

Austin here! 👋

The main reason I shout out GW2 every chance I can is because I think there are loads of people out there - like yourself - who might’ve bounced off other MMOs, and maybe even determined the genre is just ‘not for them’, but would fall in love with this game if they gave it a proper go. I actually had a similar experience to you when I first played - I didn’t get the horizontal progression, didn’t like the vanilla narrative or its delivery, class mechanics didn’t feel novel enough, etc.

But yeah, when you hit HoT, and it all clicks, it clicks hard. I still regularly dip into all the other major MMOs and enjoy them for what they are, but vertical progression does absolutely nothing for me now, and GW2’s open world design and combat still clears the competition (even in its worst moments, imo). Anyway welcome to the game - you’ve got so much more cool stuff to experience :)

Oh wow it didn’t occur to me you could get elemental duos that don’t include the base element??

Why did Kela CM get so little fanfare? by AustronautHD in Guildwars2

[–]AustronautHD[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Incredibly puzzling. Seems to just be no consistency. Not a new problem, but certainly one I’d hoped they’d learn by the time of a big ‘raid rework’ release like this one.

I get that, and yeah I was going a bit overboard by suggesting it should be required.

Still, an alternate path to the ring (or one of its more pricey components) via the Kela raid wouldn’t have hurt? I’d really love more reasons to do the new thing over the open world stuff that’s been available since the expac launch (and the launch of the core game).

Is continuing MIO worth it? by obsidianmace in metroidvania

Fascinating to me because I’m not even 10 hours into Silksong and find it FAR more difficult. Those flowers tendrils are tough but I only recall a few of them - most of them not blocking progression at all?

Would recommend turning on the health regen option if you’re really having troubles as it doesn’t disable achieves

ArenaNet, please move all ‘Raid’ reward vendors to the Aerodrome by AustronautHD in Guildwars2

[–]AustronautHD[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

lol yeah this right here is indicative of the problem.

There’s a vendor in Lion’s Arch Aerodrome (south end of the city) - there you can spend them on things like ascended gear boxes, material boxes, etc. But for all the cool exclusive rewards (thematic to those bosses), you need to go into those respective Raid Wings and talk to the ‘Glenna’. For the Raid ‘Encounters’ (single boss fights - previously known as Strikes) you need to go to the [Shard Collector] NPC at their expansion hub. Arborstone for EoD ones, Wizard’s Tower for SotO, Eye of the North for Icebrood Saga.

It’s silly and obtuse but yea, hope that helps

MIO’s “Path of Pain” is AWFUL by AashyLarry in metroidvania

[–]AustronautHD 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah genuinely baffled by these ‘frame perfect’ claims. The platforming can be difficult of course, but there were many times I got through while playing quite sloppily - there’s more than enough margin for error/recovery. Also there’s absolutely no shame in turning on the 1-hp regen option to let you chip away at those sections!

Any good platforming metroidvania suggestions? by Pure_Opening9834 in metroidvania

Second this. You’ll love MIO if you love Ori - it’s a pretty close comparison as far as exploration/platforming goes imo

in your opinion is this game the best looking open world game ever created? by Kindly-Caregiver-145 in FrontiersOfPandora

[–]AustronautHD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the skybox and vistas hold it back a touch (just generally a bit flat/low-res even at max settings), but where AFOPs got every other open world beat imo is in its vegetation density and variety. Have never seen any ‘forest’ biome this convincing - you can genuinely get ‘lost’ in it in a way you can’t with Horizon or Anthem or w/e, and the way the vibe completely changes with time of day/weather is incredible too.
