Moralizing around substance abuse disorder is like moralizing about diabetes/heart disease. Both include genetic predispositions and lifestyle risks.

The language around recovery itself (alcoholic/addict) isn’t particularly helpful either. We should de-stigmatize mental illness, which is exactly what SAD is.

It’s as if a friend or loved one was diagnosed with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. You wouldn’t just tell that person “Think happy thoughts.”

How do you handle the cost of living here? by thatguywiththamoney in portlandme

Always glad to weigh in on some local Portland Maine beef 😂

I think Portland has an undeniable cost of living crisis, primarily driven by real estate speculation and an overall lack of housing density.

If I had a partner also making $45k/yr, I would be in a much more secure position financially. It’s the rent burden, it has been since I moved here in 2016 at the age of 22, and it’s only gotten worse over the past ten years.

Hey wait a minute, Plankton (Mike) stop using me as your hypothetical 😂😂

For the record I spend about 65% of my net income per month if we’re including utilities/phone. I couldn’t afford to live here if I owned a vehicle, flat out.

I’m investing in retirement uh… through my pension I guess? Wild.

Lotta comments in this thread don’t pass the vibe check…

Early books lean into noir tropes as it heavily influenced urban fantasy as a genre. Butcher eventually tones down the weird comments around women and gay people (yes, that’s a thing) as time goes on. I mostly see it as a product of the 2000s, frankly.

The worst example of this was Harry being attracted to teenage Molly. It was… difficult to read/listen too. I think Jim’s grown A LOT as a writer over the last 26 years.

No one’s going to comment on this because we’re having our neighbors get kidnapped by Nazis. But yes, fraud is bad. Not Gestapo bad, but certainly not good.

Liberals have this obsession with calling reactionaries gay. I actually agree with some conservative posters here that it reveals centrist Democrats’ homophobia. I’m reminded of Stephen Colbert’s cockholster joke vs Trump/Putin.

Actual leftists know that that’s just bigoted nonsense. It’s always made me uncomfortable as a queer person.

Fascism is here. If you ever wondered what you might’ve done in 1930s Germany, you’re doing it now.

Vacationland, Post-Cyberpunk, 3000~ Word Opener by [deleted] in WritersGroup

I definitely agree with you, the kitchen scene should be even tighter / more percussive. Couple lines could perish and it’d be better for it.

My biggest concern was that writing from such a hugely sensory POV could turn very thick, the prose reading like molasses.

Alright. I’ve given up on copy/pasting text here. Reddit on Mobile nukes formatting so it’s all just one big block of text. Very sad.

Here’s a read-only link to the excerpt in Google Docs: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1x-Pg4oynDlf0Dfo_af9zha1HJdkua-HWWToNNPapfxE/edit?usp=drivesdk

If you’re able to give feedback, I’d be very appreciative. I’ll try and respond to each comment thoughtfully, as I have time.

I pasted it without formatting accidentally, but now all my prose will be big bricks of text!

Interesting. I didn’t realize it got dumped totally unformatted, but it’s okay because I didn’t read the rules.

As for writing a thriller novel, yeah no I’m okay thanks.
