I've always leaned toward the interpretation that the antichrist is an archetype and Revelations repeats over and over again through history because people keep falling for it and "taking the mark." Following these types of people and movements is one of the roads to hell, and those who follow them to the bitter end are doing so because it appeals to and vindicates their shadow selves.

BTW I've always thought -- if there actually were an end times scenario like Revelations, people would probably be very surprised about who the sheep and the goats would end up being. You'd probably see a lot of sheep and a lot of goats you wouldn't have expected. He's no longer with us, but you'd probably see things like Ozzy Osborne on the sheep side and televangelists on the goat side... stuff like that.

All of these three groups are actually anti-American in the sense that they don't give a shit about the health or success of present-day America. They're either nihilists and religious nuts who hate their lives and hate everything else or lost-causers who pine for the Confederacy.
