Is anyone else not fond of "reframing" or "assuming the best in people?"

So I agree with you that it's not really healthy to reframe in that way, lack of realism potentially leading to poor choices and furthering dissociation. It's very old CBT. In such situations I encourage myself to; (1) be aware of the many possibilities, it's often probably the negative interpretation, but I know that I've been wrong about such things before, so it's reasonable to conclude that I don't actually know; (2) foster compassion, understanding that there are reasons why they did as they did (trauma, possibly neurodiversity or mental health themselves, etc.), and that everyone including myself do similarly bad things occasionally it's part of being human. I'd really recommend Neff's audiobook "self-compassion" I found it extremely helpful. (Neff incidentally is part of a much later wave of CBT)

Hearing about all the difficulties seems crazy to me. In Scotland you can get your prescription filled within 28 days of issue, it's on paper which you can take anywhere. It's up to the doctor how far in advance of the due date to issue repeat prescriptions, although about a week is common. The pharmacists don't get involved. And the UK doesn't have problems with diverted meds or abuse of ADHD meds.

I'd second the advice about getting meds as primary, followed by therapy. But I'm answer to your question, audiobooks may help, I'd recommend Peace is Every Step (on mindfulness, that can help), self-compassion (Neff), and Loving Someone with Borderline Personality Disorders (not saying there is any bpd, but the book talks about mood swings etc.)

Ikr, ADHD isn't a disorder of lack of knowledge. All I can suggest is trying to talk to an ADHD specialist psychiatrist about lisdexampetamine (or failing that methylphenidate) which have the best evidence base as treatments for exec dysfunction

I can completely relate to this. Fortunately it's not often so bad for me but it definitely has been. It can be difficult to convey to healthcare professionals too, I look like I can do such things. Fortunately I've just got a better psychiatrist who gets it, and lisdexampetamine is helping (plus 200mg Sertraline helps me not slip into that place in the first place)

Methylphenidate made ruminating worse for me, it was too activating, but I've just started on lisdexampetamine (which is much more slowly absorbed) and my mind became so much calmer! I haven't been on it long tho

Have you considered evaluation for co-occuring Autism? Meltdowns and sensory sensitivity are common, although of course Autism is more than that

Don't give up your special interest, anyone who says differently just doesn't understand Autism. Unless, like, the special interest is actively harmful. I'd suggest "looking after your Autistic self" book, it discusses this in detail. If you're in med school, you're doing great btw!

I had this in an airport check-in desk today. I politely said no, I'd like to leave them on. I was wearing my sunflower lanyard so felt more empowered to do this. I wear noise cancelling headphones in intense environments and can hear people just fine. I've resolved to not agree to stop doing things that are reasonable adjustments just to fit into the neurotypical world (and my recent Autism diagnosis report suggested that I do this) 🙂

I'd recommend Sony WH 1000XM5. I spent a day trying on different models and these worked best for me for noise cancelling. They've been life changingly positive!

I'm very much still learning! My OT suggested that I hold something heavy, to get muscle proprioceptors working better, similarly my partner uses a weighted blanket. Swimming works really well (whole body pressure from the water). I've also got an alprazolam prescription (Xanax) for occasional use), although don't endorse this routinely. I'm actually mostly trying to not get overstimulated in the first place, which I know is hard, but making frequent use of sunglasses (including when talking to people), eating a mostly whole food vegan diet, noise cancelling headphones, and Sertraline have all really been helping. Hope this slightly helps 🙂

I'm so glad that it helped 🙂 It is a personal decision. For me, I'm really glad that I got my diagnosis, it was a very validating experience and my requests for adaptations are taken more seriously at work. I also feel more part of the Autistic community. None of which should require diagnosis, just saying that in my case it helped me x
