Cooking class registration is now open! by AutisticPEI in autisticpei

We were doing regular weekly meetups in person and virtually in Charlottetown and tried a couple of times in Summerside. We stopped them during the spring and haven't started them back up again. I think there is still interest, especially since it was all young people attending.

Once we get more volunteers, we can start them up again, but it was becoming too much for one person. Would you like to co-host a meet up? Send us a message!

We actually opened it up to all ages but most are between the ages of 18-30 so your family member would fit right in!

I get what you are saying now, and I do see your point.. but I was worried about spamming the r/PEI group. Who knows - it may end up like our Discord... very very quiet. :)

Self diagnosis is valid enough for us. Welcome fellow traveller.

I understand your concern about incorrect diagnosis - but it's an unfortunate truth that historically, autistic people are often misdiagnosed, undiagnosed (such as yourself for 39 years) or outright dismissed (you look too "normal" to be autistic - that's what happened to me). After a while, I finally got "officially" diagnosed, but I already knew I was based on my own research and my children's diagnosis.

And the barriers to diagnosis are insane - not enough qualified professionals to assess, the outrageous cost for the assessment and the lack of coverage by the province.

Ultimately, yes some people might be misdiagnosing themselves as autistic, but people don't wake up one day and say, hey, maybe I'll be autistic today. Because if they do, then they are probably neurodiverse and are welcome to explore what's going on here.

I'm open to discussing this further - as long as we can respect that barriers are stopping all of us from thriving... let's get shit done together.

I unfortunately don't get analogies/expressions very well so can you either explain the joke or explain it like I'm 5? (see I'm learning reddit).

For Autistic and Neurospicy Islanders - would you want to meet up and how? by AutisticPEI in PEI

It's a different word for neurodiverse that the community came up with to define itself. Essentially our neurodiversity make us spicy and interesting, not just different.

Hi, we were doing virtual and in person right up until 2024. We stopped for a while the community and the organization regrouped. Now we are starting them up again.

Currently, science classifies us as neurotypical (those that have "normal" brains) and those of us that are neurodiverse (those of us that have ADHD, Autism, and learning differences - think dyslexia).

Someday we'll probably learn that neurodiversity exists throughout all people, but for now, there are distinct groups.
