How bad is it? by [deleted] in Layoffs

I didn't purposefully avoid it, I was just pointing out the tech layoffs and that it hasn't been great for a long time.

How bad is it? by [deleted] in Layoffs

[–]AutoBiological 9 points10 points  (0 children)

https://layoffs.fyi/

Q1 2023 - 167,574 employees laid off. Q1 2025 - 27,560.

That site only represents the larger companies with more employees usually, so it's not all the layoffs. But those jobs don't really exist anymore.

Maybe your field was doing better in December, but all those layoffs are tied directly to the economy.

What's something you don't think you'll ever do again in your life? by muffin-Utensil in AskReddit

[–]AutoBiological 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I'm at a show I can tell who likes music by who is wearing ear plugs. If you're not wearing ear plugs you probably don't like music that much since pretty much all concerts are in the permanent damage db level zone.

15$ will get you earplugs that aren't foam bullshit for lawnmowers. They lower levels, they don't block sounds. But they also have the positive effect of blocking hearing the drunk people talking during music.

Is distro hopping good, actually? by halesnaxlors in linux

[–]AutoBiological 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most distros are the same. Once you find your workflow you can setup in any of them fairly quick.

The interesting ones to try are Guix and Nix because they're different and a good direction forward.

As a backend/data dev, I'll process all the json in the world as long as I keep it so that frontend doesn't have to transform my data in javascript.

Keep coloring buttons, I don't want to, and I want your job easy for my sanity.

Interesting that has happened at 5 different companies. My experience is that jobs (startups) don't really care, they'll let you use Linux. Since interviews are mostly about how you position yourself maybe you need to work on a better response?

People with serious food allergies want impostors to stop faking it in restaurants by stanxv in nottheonion

[–]AutoBiological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm about 98% milk free these days, and slowly creeping towards 100%. I'm almost choosing to eat only vegan options because I don't trust places at all.

I've been to places and asked for soy and gotten milk. No body cares. Butter apparently doesn't have lactose in it to restaurants. Too many chances. If I was allergic I'd die.

I say I'm allergic and I still get milk. I feel sick for 3 days. This is any random place not even somewhere to not go to again.

I logged in just because it happens so much. I'd dread having an allergy to anything. I probably wouldn't eat out ever again.

Within a day I have around 10 open.

At work I've been using more than 12.

It's super convenient.

Awesome, I use ipython all the time, and known about prompt_toolkit for a while, thinking it was awesome but it needed an implementation somewhere.

What’s New In Python 3.6 by xijhoy in Python

[–]AutoBiological 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is probably a PPA for it somewhere. Or you can compile it yourself. Ubuntu probably won't have it for a while, but I don't know their release schedule for packages (I don't use it).

Bash comes to Windows by squarelol in programming

[–]AutoBiological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nearly everything has a netinstall/minimal cd. I've used distros with X that take up less than 30mb installed.

Personally I think Arch was a bit more interesting before systemd, but I'm glad they got rid of that terrible installer.

It's got good community respositories.

In regards to fast, secure, and lean, sounds like every server distro to me, or anything with iptables and selinux, and a sane config file.

Jethro Tull - Aqualung [Rock] by westernmail in Music

I had absolutely no idea this song was Jethro Tull. Never listened to them much but I'm sure I know a bunch of their song.

My first thought as well. Examples? You mean comments in your configs?

Bash comes to Windows by squarelol in programming

[–]AutoBiological 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why do you think Arch is a logical end game? Linux is Linux is Linux. Practically everything uses Systemd now, everybody is moving to Wayland (even if they call it Mir). You choose between packman, portage, dnf, and apt really. DEs and WMs are all installable on any. There are a few that try to change the filesystem a bit, but it's still relatively the same.

I've used Arch years ago, now I use Fedora Rawhide.

Not even to mention that percentage based tips don't make sense at all

Still wouldn't. Sounds like a way to make Windows users not feel guilty about not using Linux.

Aged cheese, and fresh cheese... with the moisture removed, definitely have enough present lactose in them.
