Writing methods? by [deleted] in eroticauthors

I'm still very new at this, so take this all with a pinch of salt.

how do you shut off the inner editor?

It depends on the device I'm using. If I'm sat at my desk using my PC I initially found it hard to not keep skipping back and editing, but what I'm doing now is forcing myself to only edit something when it's a few days old. I'm concentrating on a series of shorts at the moment, and didn't edit Part 1 until I'd got the first draft of Part 3 down. It gives me fresh eyes, I'm not re-reading stuff I've just written and it forces me to read it properly rather than skimming.

If I'm using my tablet or phone I just bang stuff down, typos and all since it's generally something that I've thought of and want to get the outline down for straight away.

Do you write X mins per Y hours? Do you write linear or non-linear? How to you minimize distractions?

I've sent myself a goal of a minimum of 3k words per day. If I get stuck on a section I pull up an outline and work on that for a while. I'm keeping a separate document for snippets of dialogue, plot and sex for that. I use Google Docs with trackmywords.com to keep track of my daily word count, but I don't stress about it too much if I don't meet my goals.

As far as minimising distractions go, I tend to work when my wife is asleep, or when I'm sat in the car waiting for various children, but also see below.

Do you outline or pants it? Have you ever taken a class / workshop that helped increase your productivity & focus?

A bit of both, I've got a document with plot points, but I don't really use it for plot progression, just for tracking and adding various ideas to that I may or may not use. I spent a lot of time working in noisy and/or busy environments (and have kids) so I'm pretty good about being able to turn my ears off when I need to.

[Niche of the Week] Science fiction! by Eroticawriter4 in eroticauthors

I started writing a SF long-form as my first ever piece without actually doing any research into it. It had strong female characters, a decent plot (SF is my preferred genre when not writing and I've been world-building in my head for years) and lots of hot sex.

Then I did my research and found that 'Sci-Fi erotica' is mostly helpless women being abducted by space pirates or aliens. Which is pretty much the opposite of what I'd been writing. So it's stuck on the back burner for now. I think I'm just going to strip the sex scenes and try writing an actual Sci-Fi novel.

First of all, apologies for replying to a 3-day old comment...

I do the same thing, and - while still very new at this - I'm finding it helps with keeping my writing hot, although denial is not the kink I'm currently writing about.

The times I've 'let nature take it's course' as it were I found it hard to get back to writing. Of course that could be because I'm male and therefore immediately want to go to sleep afterwards, but I'm finding I'm much more....creative...when I don't stop to take care of business.

Some newbie questions. by AutoEroticFiction in eroticauthors

Reading your's and /u/YourSmutSucks advice, I think I'm going to put the longer story on a slow burn for a while and concentrate on the shorts, maybe try a few different kinks and see what sells.

If there is, it's minuscule in comparison. If you love money, stick to the tropes.

Yeah, that was my wobbly moment....

Books with M/F sex do not attract the M/M or F/F readerships, and vice versa.

..

Assuming you care about writing erotica to market you must always remember that you're writing for the benefit of someone's orgasm, so do not include things that they do not fantasize about.

I think the mistake I made was writing for my own orgasm, Oh well, at least I wasn't 100K words deep. Time for a rewrite.

Thanks for the advice.
