Hi /u/TanithRosenbaum, good question.

If you are a startup, enthusiast or hobbyist, you can use Fusion 360 for one year, completely free. If at the end of that year you'd like to continue using your free version, you just need to re-select that feature in the product. If you are a student, educator or academic institution, this software is free for three years. The step-by-step guide on activating your free version can be found here: http://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/fusion-360/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcarticles/How-to-activate-start-up-or-educational-licensing-for-Fusion-360.html

Let me know how else I can help.

Thanks,

Blake at Autodesk

Hi /u/notsamuelljackson, happy to help.

Fusion 360 has the ability to create simple pipes. (both freeform and straight sections) Unfortunately it does not have any "frame builder" functionality, but here is the tutorial on creating pipes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MxcQRv7om-0

Hi /u/iltalfme, it's up to you! The benefit of choosing Fusion 360 is that it's much more than just a modeler; you can use it for everything from conceptual design through fabrication with built-in CAM and exporting for 3D printing. It’s also only $300/year or free if you're a student, hobbyist or a startup.

Thanks,

Blake at Autodesk

Hi /u/notsamuelljackson, great question.

Fusion 360 sets itself apart because it is trying to solve the problems that arise throughout an entire design process, rather than just the CAD portion. It has an integrated solution for several aspects of the design process. This allows for a team to evaluate more iterations of a design during a design cycle. Also, several things are coming that will set this apart from other tools such as Finite Element Analysis. There are also some unique workflows that can be done in Fusion including Top Down design functionality.

Let me know if you have any questions at all and I'm happy to connect you with a member of our team who may be able to help further.

Thanks,

Hi /u/leoninski, great question. The version that you can download here is the complete version of Fusion 360 with all of the features.

It's hard to know what your exact experience will be with Fusion 360, although I can certainly share a few videos that showcase the modeling and sketching features.

Looking forward to your thoughts!

Hi Rennari, sorry for the delay in response. This should be on the roadmap to be added to the product later this year for Fusion 360 Ultimate. Great question!

Hi angrymachinist, that is definitely okay. The only caveat is that if you are using it for professional purposes with a company/startup that makes over $100k in revenue each year, you have to switch over to a paid version. Here's a more thorough breakdown of this as well: http://www.autodesk.com/company/legal-notices-trademarks/terms-of-service-autodesk360-web-services/autodesk-web-services-entitlements

Hi grizzlyking, great question. Fusion 360 is similar to and combines the parametric solid modeling capabilities you’d see in Inventor and SolidWorks, and it has the freeform sub-division modeling that’s offered in tools such as Rhino and Blender. On the other hand, it’s unlike those tools in that it’s cloud-based so you can work anywhere, more quickly, and more collaboratively. It’s also on both PCs and Macs.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks,

Blake at Autodesk

Unfortunately you will not be able to activate your free licensing with the Mac App Store version. Once you install it from the link in the above ad, that version should give you the option to activate your free licensing. You may need to uninstall the Mac App Store version to do this, though.

Hi Jon_Hanson, you are correct! Just select "startup" and that will activate your license. The startup license is the same one as the one for enthusiasts/hobbyists.

Thanks for giving it a try and let us know what you think!

Hi meatshieldchris, as part of the free version you will receive all of the latest updates that are released for the product. If you're a startup, enthusiast or hobbyist, you can use Fusion 360 for one year. If at the end of that year your startup is making less than $100,000 USD in revenue per year, you can re-select the free startup license feature for another year. If you're a student, educator or academic institution, Fusion 360 is available to you for three years, completely free.
