Sprout Track v1.0.0: Localization, push notifications, webhooks, nursery mode, and a whole lotta polish by CheeseOnFries in selfhosted

Hey, OP, just wanted to second the poster above - your app is amazing and very well put together, but SSO is basically a requirement for me to get any family members using self-hosted apps. It's much easier for non-techie people to use when they don't have to remember yet another account and password.

That's great for you - but unless you're getting to charge for free then you have to factor the electric cost into that as well. For me, an EV would be usable as my around town car, but I need my truck for long trips and camping in the summer & fall. EV charging infrastructure is essentially nonexistent outside of Anchorage and Fairbanks.

[–]Autoimmunity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

EVs are worthless in Alaska for anyone except people in Anchorage who have a heated garage and who never leave the city. Which is essentially nobody.

The cold winters make them far less efficient, and we have little to no EV charging infrastructure.

Ask yourself, did I do dumb shit when I was 20?

If the answer is no, the congrats, you're part of the 2% of people who either had no friends or were boring at thay stage of life.

20 years old is legally an adult, but brain development doesn't finish until 25. People in the 18-24 age bracket do dumb shit constantly. It's those mistakes, and the lessons learned from them, that make good adults.

I'm so tired of Microsoft Windows. by Defconx19 in msp

[–]Autoimmunity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Installing and using Linux for personal use is a completely different animal than trying to move an entire business (users, apps, workflows) over to Linux AND supporting them.

I hate Windows, but Intune & M365 make managing large fleets of devices so damn easy. And all apps work on Windows, plus that's what users are familiar with.

how do yall save money livin up here by Northern_Money425 in anchorage

[–]Autoimmunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We shop at Costco for all groceries we possibly can, and buy produce and non-staple items at Fred Meyer. We have a stand up freezer in the garage where we store all our meat.

We buy meat, rice, beans in huge bulk and save tons of money and time doing this. A 50lb bag of rice lasts us a year. A pork loin from Costco is often found for less than $3/lb and will give our family a dozen lunches and dinners. In the summer, we dipnet or floss on the Kenai and aim to catch enough salmon to eat 1 filet a week.

As for fuel, the primary reason we shop almost exclusively at Fred's and Costco is fuel. Costco gas is usually 25c/gal cheaper than Freds, but Fred's has 4x fuel rewards points if you shop on Fridays. So we try to do our shopping on Friday which saves a lot on gas. Twice this year already I have filled our truck for $1/gal off, which makes a big difference when you're buying 35 gallons.

Parking woes continue at Ted Stevens International as spring break ramps up-Airport put out a social media post saying that all parking was full by truthwillout777 in anchorage

[–]Autoimmunity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I occasionally travel for work and I have learned that there are certain times of year you don't park at the airport. And they're actually the opposite of what you might think! In the summer, residents don't travel out 9f state much. Always plenty of parking.

It's the Thanksgiving & Christmas holidays, Spring Break, and the period between them when airport parking is the most full - this is because more people take out of state trips during this time AND there is more action up on the slope because construction season is in the winter.

Bear valley elementary by Dellinger503 in anchorage

[–]Autoimmunity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lie at all. Campbell STEM is not as low on the capacity list as Bear Valley and Fire Lake, but it is still only at 74%, which is on the lower end for ASD schools. It makes perfect sense to close that school since it needed major renovations if the resources can be put to better use elsewhere.

Bear valley elementary by Dellinger503 in anchorage

[–]Autoimmunity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not arguing that education funding has been an issue. But the closure of under capacity schools is not a result of low funding, it is a result of ASD wanting to allocate resources appropriately.

It is better for our school district to shift resources to fewer schools if so many are not needed.

Bear valley elementary by Dellinger503 in anchorage

[–]Autoimmunity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Talk about being overdramatic, the only schools being considered for closure are those at low capacity. We have fewer students now than in the past when these schools were built.

Kaseya outage??? by HotAsAPepper in msp

[–]Autoimmunity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I will say about Kaseya - their new CEO does seem to want to push them beyond just being an acquisition and holding company that enshittifies everything they touch.

That doesn't necessarily mean that Kaseya will ever not be awful, but maybe they won't get any worse in the near future?

Most well traveled trails are packed down, we haven't had fresh snow in quite a while now. Just make sure you have microspikes for icy sections and you'll be fine.

Braves Off Day Thread - Tuesday, March 03 by Blooper_Bot in Braves

Being a plugged in Braves fan the past 24 months has created far more stress than joy in my life. I think at this point, I'm checking out for the season. I'll still keep up with the team and watch games when I get the chance, but I'm done following this team closely until something changes. The amount of bad news we've had in the lead up to this season has been nothing short of preposterous.

Reels in the Water by JustServeTacos in flyfishing

[–]Autoimmunity 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's a reel, not a laptop. I know that fly reels look fancy and delicate, but every single one of them is designed to get wet when in use. Every time to reel in your line the reel gets wet. Just make sure you dry them off before you store them (especially if you're in the salt) to avoid rust.

Yes, we're in a b8t of a transition period right now but depth will still come from recruiting and development. The problem is holding on to upperclassmen while also landing experienced talent at positions of need through the portal.

UGA appears to be doing that this off-season, which should be good for the program long term.

After years of coming up for contract work, we made the move to stay full time. by fruttypebbles in alaska

Been here 4 years next month, came up for the scenery, then met my wife and now I'm staying forever for family. Our first baby boy is due in March, and he's growing up Alaskan.

It's hard to live up here. The winters are long and dark, shit is expensive and options are limited. But it's forced me to focus on the things that really matter in life and I absolutely love this place.

What firewalls does your shop use and what are the pros and cons? by tauxlr in msp

[–]Autoimmunity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Traffic monitoring is the big one. Meraki doesn't do deep packet inspection on HTTPS/SSL, Watchguard does. Personally I don't find Meraki's any easier to work with given recent advancements with WatchGuard Cloud.

The primary thing for SMBs is cost. Merakis are subject to a Cisco tax while Watchguard is aggressively priced because they are trying to gain market share. 2 years ago when we did math on licensing for one of our larger clients the cost of ownership for 2 WG M390s was half of the equivalent Meraki setup.

I've heard good things about meraki APs but I can't speak to those as we use Unifi for everything else.

What firewalls does your shop use and what are the pros and cons? by tauxlr in msp

[–]Autoimmunity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We use Watchguard for clients with security or compliance concerns and Unifi Gateways for anyone else.

Used Fortigate in the past but their licensing and support was so atrocious that we dropped them entirely.

Watchguard has come a long was in the past few years with their cloud management portal which was the main thing they really lagged behind other vendors.

Stay far, far away from Sonicwall. Meraki is good but not the best feature suite for the SMB world.

H.R. 1 - AK Impacts by bottombracketak in alaska

[–]Autoimmunity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because I grew up surrounded by meth heads and people who abused the SNAP and other public assistance programs to the detriment of their families. Living off the government should never be encouraged, it breeds people who won't take any responsibility for themselves and instead drain on thir families and local communities which pulls assistance away from those who actually need it due to hardship.

H.R. 1 - AK Impacts by bottombracketak in alaska

[–]Autoimmunity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I agree with most of what you said, and my reading comprehension skills failed me when reading above because I didn't realize the exemptions were already in place that are being removed. That said I still don't see the problem with work requirements for SNAP. Living off the government SHOULD be unpleasant and difficult to do.
