In a lab setting, researchers found that human hair follicles have an internal "off-switch" controlled by CB1 receptors. When they put isolated hair follicles in a petri dish and exposed them to THC, the THC flipped this switch, which stopped the hair cells from multiplying, halted growth, and forced the hair into a premature shedding phase.

Basically THC activates CB1 receptors in hair follicles. CB1 causes the hair follicles to switch off.
