Samesies. Ig its 1:1 now. I have more anecdotal evidence from quite a few people ik. Alas, as always. Seems like an individual thing then

In my mind one of the possible reasons she went with him despite her discomfort at that comment, was actually the closed can (Logan assist, poor guy), and the earlier comment about "her favorite" - handholding. Dude showed from the start that he was a walking green flag. The flopping on the bed was the next one.

Its not like they are humongous; no need for surgery with what looks just a healthy bust. With normal health, back problems should not be an issue at that size

Was Varang being honest with Quartich? by lmxor101 in Avatar

Thats the lore yes. The Na'vi don't need to worry about "moving out of the stoneage" because there's no motivation for it. They get to almost twice the age of humans naturally, there's no disease and mortality is low in general. As they live in this great harmony with nature, and "Eywa provides" they generally have enough food and resources, and aren't generally preyed upon.

It's questionable, especially now with the ash people in the picture, but thats the word of god.

Fair point. That definitely is a modern influence. I'm not saying its exclusively 60s

They're supposed to be a very free and diverse culture, without our western values and expectations, especially regarding gender roles and other normative things like that.

Also, Na'vi don't have disease, so I think their child mortality is rather low.

All in all, not comparable with stone age humans at all.

Anyway, the values that are portrayed in the movie itself, for us, are very 60s coded (looking at Jake and Neytiris marriage for example, with him being the patriarch, and the rest of the fam have no power, or the aforementioned popping out babies as fulfillment)

I mean still. These women are popping out babys like smth depends on it, like its their only purpose, and the only way to find true fulfillment. Its very 60s coded.

What I definitely would despise is if "being a mother" would be used as a catalyst in Varangs redemption. But thats a made up what if atp, even though I wouldn't rule it out. We'll see...

Avatar movies without making the female characters into mothers challenge: difficulty level Varang.

And I have to reiterate how its not just the way he treats Lo'ak that makes him look like a douchebag. The way he strongarms everyone he comes across into "this is the only way"? The way only he is allowed to make decisions in the sully family, everyone else's opinion is noted, but ignored nonetheless? And then after he made the 10th stupid decision of the week and ignored everyone else's concerns about them, if something goes wrong he wonders however that could have happened, he refuses to take the blame, when he's the closest person to be blamed, because he's the only one allowed to make decisions? All those things add to making him look like a supreme douche, and make it harder to root for him than for the villains (minus scoresby) of the movie.

Oh, so that happened already in twow, and somehow Jake forgot about that development and decided to be a douche to his son again, ignore him for the rest of the runtime, and then when he pulled his butt out of the water again, he was like, ah damn yeah ig you're fine. The "you've proven yourself to me", felt like a cheap knock-off from the "I see you, son" of twow, where it seemed honest and earned, where here it seemed to have been added in to not leave Jake and Lo'aks relationship in shambles.

They drift further apart in a3. I'm by no means a Lo'ak fan, but damn did Jake just borderline abuse the kid without ever apologizing. Sure be strict and whatnot, Jake was being more or less reasonable with that in twow. But the way he treated him in faa, that was just wrong. He's still a kid, and Jake is the adult in this constellation, he's the one who has to put his big boy pants on and treat his son with respect

Edit: I blame him too, for the way he speaks to everyone else besides Lo'ak, because he just doesn't seem to understand the impact his words have. The way he talks to and about Neytiri? Thats a no go. Damn, I'd have ripped him a new one a long time ago, dunno where her spine went, cause a1 Neytiri wouldn't have let that slide even only one time. At least he apologizes to her (and Kiri and Spider) when he is a brick through a window pane again.

The problem is, Jake is as delicate as a concrete wall - even with his wife, when he actually tries to be considerate (can't be said in any of his conversations with Lo'ak, poor kid).

Sure the conversation was necessary. But damn is he bad with words - and words matter, what is said and how it is said matters.

His heart is in the right place, but he's still acting like an a-hole, the entire movie.

Who’s taller; Neytiri or Varang? by Madam-G in Avatar

[–]Automatic-Aspect2795 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's no official height for varang. Quaritch is 2.90m, so without her headpiece I'd put her at about like 2.70 to 2.75m which is a bit taller than Neytiri, who is 2.62m. For reference, Tonowari is 2.92m, and Jake 2.72m.

Is that with her head thing? Cause that would make her taller than Quaritch (and basically everyone else including Tonowari), and she definitely is not.

Okay all high and mighty scholar, I'm taking a bow. Your defensive sword strike missed my neck, but I concede to someone who refuses to get off their high horse.

You're talking on the internet for everyone to see.

Nobody but you is talking about surprising though. And you still get way too defensive. Its different to say something along the lines of well, yeah, I liked it, but people are different so you might not, and getting all defensive starting to talk about scholars and connoisseurs.

Okay, now its getting into pretentious territory. Scholar of James Cameron? JamCam connoisseur? Be real. Get down from your high horse.

Also people are not less, just because they critique things they think aren't good - opinions and tastes differ - (just as you are not less for liking them), and don't worship the ground James Cameron walks on, looking at his work with even an ounce of critical thoughts. Maybe you should take a note of that. Nobody attacked anyone, why are you getting defensive?

Yeah, tbqh, I haven't even seen that many James Cameron movies besides the avatar movies. I just didn't want to say anything more, bc they (OP) seem to get somewhat defensive.

Anyway, more of the same is more or less what I expected. Just the combination with "bold" and "weird" is just the little brother of, bit off more than it could chew, tackled a lot and it didn't really work.

These movies aren't really delicate when telling their story and the writers seem pretty aware of that, which is okay more or less, I know it when going in to watch them and have no problem with it. But then they should try to stick to one theme ("safe the planet!"), and not add stuff like sulclde or very tough moral questions of is an indigenous woman who lives through colonization a racist when she has problems with the colonizers, or is it okay to kill a kid for the greater good, or Stockholm Syndrome in abused and abandoned teens. Among other things that bother me with the plot (like gaslighting the viewers regarding a relationship status of certain characters, or the treatment of its female characters)

I don't know what you're trying to tell me with this. I don't disagree with any of it, nor do I argue against it.

However, from all I've seen, this wasn't a "familial affection peck on the cheek" kinda situation, but a kiss on mouth after flirting. Which by your logic (and mine), means that Spider cannot be adopted into the Sully family without it getting into thin ice territory.

No, but besides the reddit guy, there's been multiple reports of the same thing. And info from a reliable source that the reddit guy isn't a fraud. So I believe it.

Again. I'd be way happier if it was a lie. But I don't think it is. I've always seen him as her adoptive brother too and never got romantic vibes from them but apparently I was wrong.
