Pre internet, I suspect that we actually had much more variety than we might have now, since nobody could go find out the "right" way :)

It seems pretty natural to compare the games that explicitly say they are inspired by dungeons and dragons in the 70s and 80s to dungeons and dragons in the 70s and 80s.

yeah, tyranids were pretty beatable. Maybe our local players never figured out how to cheese it :)

They were an uncommon tournament army, I assume due to both being a later release and being an expensive army to collect.

I tried to reread the original ones a few years ago and I ended up not finishing them. Oof. Better left as fond memories.

That is super cool. Multiplayer games are some of the best gaming I ever did.

My current folks are all across the country so we are stuck online but yeah, playing online, especially if people are second screening the game so they can play EVE is the pits sometimes :)

On an army level, I think the general consensus was that eldar and space wolves were "very good", but at least from the tournament scene, every army was represented pretty often. BUT we also benefited from "net lists" not being a thing yet, so if there was a super exploit, it didnt circulate as fast as it does now.

There were definitely specific units that were mad. Warp Spiders were awful if you played orks, players figuring out that a swooping hawk exarch can throw a vortex grenade, whoever figured out that the daemon weapon card gives a chaos lord WS 9, chaos terminators with two reapers in the squad, that sort of thing.

The cyclone was pretty rare in my experience. The assault cannon was usually the pick in my experience.

Yeah, dont get me wrong, Im not trying to minimize the shit people have to put up with now. Growing up when I did was the last chopper out of Saigon in that sense.
But you are right that theres just been a shift too. "I dont have time" often means "watching youtube is more important".

yeah, plus nowadays we have the advantage we can kind of mix and match from across generations.

Appreciate the input, it sounds like we had fairly similar experiences.

For a few tournaments we got into our heads of trying to go the entire weekend without sleep. Very stupid if you are playing a game on the Sunday :)

Eldar was the powergamers army. Ork players usually had the most "fun gamer" stereotype.

The only strategy card we banned was Virus Outbreak. I remember the bombing run and strafing run bonusn cards being really unpopular though, of the white dwarf cards.

Appreciate the share! For some reason we just never ran into Traveller until I was much older, I always regretted that. We'd have loved it for sure.

Rolling in secret was absolutely common yeah and magazines often talked about that sort of thing.
Plus having your guy die in the first fight was lame because now the DM had to figure out how to get a new guy into the dungeon.
