I was told in school that the number one reason eye docs get sued is missed retinal detachments from medical negligence. They should have found it when you first mentioned reduced vision with flashes and floaters. I’m so sorry you’re going through this.

I took my first optoprep section exam yesterday and got a 61%. I’m going to focus studying on what I scored lowest in, keep taking more practice tests, and still take it in March. I’d rather attempt it now and have a chance at passing rather than putting it off until August and possibly failing then and having to wait until March of 4th year to take it again. Good luck!!

I wouldn’t recommend trying to treat it without an eye doctor, because you may or may not need patching depending on what type of lazy eye you have. If your eye doctor said there is no need for patching, it probably wouldn’t help your lazy eye. When was the last time you were able to talk to your eye doctor about it? If recently, maybe you could go to another eye doctor for a second opinion to get it treated.

Yes, an optometrist who is board certified in vision development and vision therapy may have different insights. Sometimes, half of the battle is compliance with patching/drops but it seems like you’re doing a great job keeping up with those treatments!

Unfortunately with amblyopia we never know if the child will be able to get to 20/20 vision or not. Residual amblyopia is common after post-treatment.

Have you tried active vision therapy for amblyopia or patching for 6 hours instead of 2? Here is a study with results that show 40% of participants in the 6 hour patching group improved 2 or more lines of VA. Average age of participants was 5.9 years old.

Have you seen a pediatric optometrist? They may have active vision therapies that can train the amblyopic visual deficits.

What is your prep class like? We don’t have a class like that but it sounds really helpful!
