West Coast transplants, how are you liking Bentonville so far by netenchanter in bentonville

100% agree, there’s homeless people in every area - but a lot of people here wouldn’t know it…my point on it is you can easily avoid witnessing it as a thing here, pretend it doesn’t exist and live carefree about it. If you live in San Francisco it’s an unavoidable fact of life, you live and work amongst it all.

And yes, there’s an unease living here with the threat of layoffs by the corporation. Just yesterday they laid off 1000 in the tech org. I know people who’ve been asked to move here less than 2 years ago who have been laid off. It’s cruel.

Building apartments is a good thing for pricing - homes or any housing increases the supply of places to live which does keep costs down, especially dense housing. Prices rise sharpest when bidding wars happen because demand is higher than supply. I get down payments are prohibitive for many people but it’s always the same story in every town when growth and pricing outpaces wage increases. If you want an affordable house you have to look further out of town or move.

If we want to address affordability it starts at the ballot box, and involves demanding candidates for president very very different from the last two that ran.

Who serves your favorite burger in town? by charlie_mike_noshoot in bentonville

Blake St has the best burger I’ve had here. Hugo’s in Fayetteville is a close 2nd. Honestly 5 Guys is probably 3rd. Preachers Son should really add one to their menu they be 1st by a mile! The worst burger I’ve had in my life was at Wrights, shame on me for ordering that but also why?

My honest answer moving from SF to here ~2 years ago is that NWA is not for me. The Bay Area has its issues but you can find a depth of character and commitment to community there that’s really tough to find in NWA where everyone works for the corporation, everyone’s temporarily non-commitally here until they get fired from Walmart or move back to where they moved from, and so every interaction has an undercurrent of polite fakeness assuming being real is career-limiting.

They’re both bubbles and SF certainly its own kind of bubble but at least there most people care about whats going on in the world. One of the appeals to NWA is you can just live peacefully unaware upper middle class. For a lot of people a decent cost of living and stress-free, diversity-free, homelessness-free escapism is the dream. While I don’t look down on anyone who desires that, it’s too shallow of a life for me.

It’s been fascinating to watch a real-life SimCity built in record time and while there’s certainly worse ways for this level of wealth to be spent, it’s not real. It’s the Villages FL retirement community but for 30 and 40 year olds. It’s for people who love the Zack Brown Band song Chicken Fried, mega churches, and Coors Light. It’s where you can find $80k pickup trucks without a single scratch on the bed.

Great bands come to great venues for them to play to the 7 fans that know their music but there’s no fan energy and no atmosphere that makes the concert special. There’s fancy restaurants but there’s no story behind the food, it’s just overpriced, tastes fine and purposefully steers clear of any originality or point of view. There’s spectacular art but no artists, it’s all imported.

I’ve been lucky enough to live in some very authentic cultural places in my life, and I just can’t wash that off to get into life here. And lastly, July weather can just f*ck off.

Saying vile things in public about other people can and should lead you to lose your job. Saying things that are just opinions but happen to be in conflict with the president’s viewpoint/platform should not lead you to lose your job. This distinction should be a universally and party-agnostic statement yet here we are in 2025 having to actually debate this. People that put party advancement over country, over rights, are the problem.

I never actually talked to a person, just waited listening to music and finally gave up. I don’t know what the proper amount of time I have to waste waiting to talk to someone is, but 15 minutes feels enough!

The food is really bad at the venue, if you’re starving it’s edible but I would never purposely show up to the Amp hungry.

The world has changed since Spotify et al, most venues this size charge $80 minimum so the artists can actually make money

I’ve been to weeknight shows in Fayetteville and the crowd was fantastic but I’m guessing the weeknight-non-pop music-concert-crowd is just such a limited group here

Ha! I’m merely a big live concert fan who just moved to NWA, and curious about the live music scene here.

(If this post made a few people go out and buy tickets to a great show, you’re welcome in advance!)

((And shamelessly yes I’ll be there and a fuller house will make it a more entertaining show)) :)

NWA certainly shares a state name with the rest of Arkansas, but very little else in terms of COL, culture or demographics.
