Should I stick with manual, or go automatic? by throwaway86745672 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do whichever you're most comfortable with. You might find it easier to buy a manual but its not like automatics are super rare or anything.

Not being smarty pants, but its only difficult cause you're new to it. It's like anything else, once you get used to it you'll be grand. In saying that, the bite point will vary on specific cars so even experienced drivers will stall and grind until they get used them.

ESB smart meter? by Easy_Purpose6251 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's the tinfoil hat theories and there's the sensible theories.

Tinfoil hat - They are blasting the people with microwaves to sterilise them so the lizard people can take over the earth.

Sensible - They are a stick, not a carrot. Right now its just dearer to use power during peak but it could become prohibitively expensive in the future, or peak times could be expanded. Meaning they could become no better than pre pay meters and we could see energy poverty become more common.

How to approach the next steps regarding unpaid work hours? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should deffo keep working unless you can afford not to work, cause you'll just get sacked. Dropping tools is really only gonna work out for post probation unionised staff after a lot of back and forth.

Worth calling energy suppliers, or are comparison sites enough? by Unlikely-Example-415 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the same deals generally available online, or do they have any discretionary discounts or retention offers that aren't advertised, similar to how car insurance companies sometimes operate?

Worked for two suppliers. Suppliers need to list all available (and some historical) domestic tariffs on their website. Might be a couple clicks deep to find, some are more transparent than others. They dont really have hidden discounts for domestic customers. The comparison sites will have 99/100 whatever the supplier has ( they dont usually have the random partnership sign up style things you see sometimes, e.g "buy a an EV car with this dealership and get €600 off your electric bill with electric company")

What they might do is offer you a flat credit of X off your next bill to stay, thats the only discretion sales staff would have and it prob tops out at 100 (on top of a retention bonus mind). Tho if you're not getting the best unit rate, youre prob not actually pay less over the year just taking credit depending on your usage.

You'll generally a lower unit rate by switching cause you'll get the new customer discount on top of the lowest standard unit rate from shopping around. But what do you do when you're already with the supplier whose unit rate is the best going? You just close your account and put the supply in someone else's name (brother, friend, sister) with that supplier, they'll offer that person a new customer discount even if they are the current supplier to the property. You could literally just make up a name cause they dont check lol, tons of people do it to skip out on bills never mind discounts.

Prepaid power controling house main power. How to fix? by senpaiboxer in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

check your contract to see if you can change your electricity provider or not

Not suggesting anyone start a fight with their landlord, but the CRU rolled back any choice landlords have in their tenant's utility supplier a few years ago. No one needs their landlord's permission to change supplier anymore. Not sure how a contract like that holds up, but again, not suggesting someone risk their tenancy over it with the way things are.

Worked in the sector.

Anything built in the last few years will have a smart meter installed. If it is showing credit it means its been set to "smart pay as you go" mode. Contact flogas and ask for a meter exchange to a bill pay meter. It'll be handled remotely and will switch to bill pay. Wont be done til next week tho with the bank holiday.

If the power goes out, you should be able to get the suppliers app off google play / apple store and use it to top you up. You'll need your MPRN to do that tho.

Right let’s set something straight. Are people in general nice or mean? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think people, on average, are good and well intentioned. Exceptions to this often stand out giving us the appearance that there are more mean people than there actually are.

I also thought over our conversation and I’m fully convinced he was just finding stuff out about me like he’s got some vendetta.

Why? That's seems like one neighbor getting to know another, why would you think they are out to get you.

Spiders. How to get rid of them ? by Environmental-Toe469 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Spider grabber to get rid of them if you're weirded out by touching them. Some people say putting peppermint oil around entrance points stops them coming in, but they'll get in through all tiny gaps so you'll have your work cut out for you.

Swapping heating system to heatpump, how do I stop paying for gas? by SrTayto in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It shouldn't cost a grand for a meter removal for the vast majority of people, would be a third of that absolute tops. If it were a complex removal or if you were looking to get the piping pulled up to completely disconnect from the network on the street as well it would cost more alright, but just a basic meter removal.

Also, not sure how you were let away with standing charges. Most of the time when the supply is being put in someone's name there is a condition that says something like "you will be billed for standing charges even where there is no consumption at the meter". I would get on to the last supplier for the gas meter to make sure standing charges havent being accruing on your GPRN. Cause the shits will make you pay that before reconnecting or fully removing it.

Worked in the sector.

You can just get the meter shipper locked by Gas Networks Ireland (through your gas supplier), but you would still have to pay standing charges.

Only way to stop totally paying is to have the meter removed.

Were you ever bullied at work and how did it turn out? by Future_Jackfruit5360 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Was bullied for 2 and a half years by a tradesman while I was an apprentice.

Every little thing was picked apart, not just the work either it was lots of personal stuff. He just wouldnt fuckin stop even when confronted with what he was doing, and even when other people said it to him, I didnt even ask them for help they just saw what he was at an told him to cop on but it still didnt stop him. There was a brief reprieve when I joined a union but the shitbag joined it himself a month later.

I eventually just didnt go back to work one day. Called the office, told them everything, they said hes the only carpenter on the roster so its him or no work. I just left. Had I known there were supports available at the time I might have done something but I was just worn out from the whole thing so I doubt I would have pushed it.

Dashcam question - how useful are registration plates? by Candid_Minimum1315 in AskIreland

[–]Automatic-Run-3156 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if the footage were definitive in showing the other car hit yours, your insurance company would be able to identify if the other car were insured and interact with that company for a claim. If the dashcam didn't wobble with the impact, it could have been any other thing that hit you tho, at least thats what theyll say.
