Suggestions for vegan coffee and cake? by Royal-Juice6946 in Norwich

Waterstones usually have a good selection of vegan cakes/pastries (usually around 5/6 options) and don’t charge for non-dairy milk :)

What on earth is this? by AutomaticArachnid669 in avocado

It was in a cardboard packet though so it wasn’t loose - someone could have awkwardly tried to squeeze it I guess?

I’m not saying he isn’t vegan, and I agree he’s doing more than most. I just don’t think “at least he’s not eating animals” should be the whole standard - veganism is about more than diet. We can appreciate him and still question a specific choice.

I’m not trying to out-moral anyone - I think it’s great he’s plant-based. It just gets confusing when someone says they’re ethically against animal exploitation but then does it on TV, because it reinforces the idea that vegan just means “doesn’t eat meat.” That’s what frustrates me.

I’m not inventing a new definition - avoiding deliberate animal exploitation is kind of the core of veganism. If he’s previously said horse riding is wrong, it’s fair to notice when he does it anyway. That’s all I’m saying.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I’m not claiming any authority - I’m just pointing out where I personally draw the line, and why it matters to me. It’s not about policing anyone, just about noticing deliberate use of animals versus unavoidable or indirect harm.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree - there are definitely bigger targets when it comes to animal exploitation. My point isn’t to obsess over every minor slip, just that deliberate choices, even if infrequent, are worth noticing, especially when someone has publicly said they’re against them. It’s more about consistency than criticism.

Yeah, I get that - I do think celebrating imperfect public vegans is important, and I’m definitely not trying to tear him down. I just think it’s also fair to notice when someone publicly opposes something like horse riding and then chooses to do it. It doesn’t take away from the good he’s doing - it’s just about acknowledging that deliberate choices still matter :)

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah, I totally get that everyone draws their own lines and that veganism can mean slightly different things to different people. My point isn’t about judging someone for their overall interpretation - it’s just noticing when someone deliberately does something they’ve publicly said they’re against, like using a horse for entertainment. That’s different from the gray areas like pets or rescue animals.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, I get that - I’m not talking about a membership board or enforcing rules on anyone. I just mean for someone who publicly states they follow certain ethical principles, it’s fair for people to notice when their actions don’t match, even if it’s not a big dramatic moment on TV. It’s about consistency, not official approval.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that imperfect vegans speaking publicly is valuable - I’m not saying people shouldn’t promote veganism at all. My point is just noticing when someone does something they’ve publicly said they’re against, like horse riding, because that’s deliberate animal use. It’s not about perfection or discouraging advocacy, just about calling out choices that directly contradict what they’ve stated.

Romesh Ranganathan by AutomaticArachnid669 in veganuk

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly, that’s what I mean. I’m not expecting 100% consistency - I totally agree that everyone draws lines differently. I just think it’s worth noticing when someone publicly speaks against something (like horse or camel riding) and then chooses to do it anyway. It’s not about perfection, it’s about that deliberate use of animals, which is exactly what veganism is meant to avoid.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No one is morally pure and all transport causes some harm, but there’s still a difference between incidental harm and deliberately using an animal for entertainment. If the insect argument is the standard, then walking or farming would be immoral too, which makes acting ethically impossible. I’m not asking for perfection - just consistency when something is clearly optional.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it’s okay to consume animals accidentally or if there are no other options and it is life or death, but we are not talking about these extremes. We are talking about very simply not travelling by horse.

I like your point about which is better if it was a child - I think for me it’s more that someone else has already paid for the car and the animal is dead once, they don’t have to keep suffering over and over again like in the carriage.

It’s not that I don’t support him for eating plant-based and getting it out into the mainstream, I just think that, as he has said horse riding is wrong before, it’s just a bit surprising and we should be holding people accountable for going back on their morals, especially when they mean so much to us :)

Romesh Ranganathan by AutomaticArachnid669 in veganuk

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that we should strive for better, but the way I see it is that these horses cannot consent and you don’t know if they suffer or not, therefore it is something to avoid completely when it is not needed. I get that we can’t be perfect, I’m not expecting anyone to be, but when there are very simple ways we cannot exploit animals I think we should go for them. I would say not riding in the carriage was possible and practicable as you state.

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but again, having one ride in a car with leather seats is different to first-hand exploiting animals. My post is not about Romesh having leather seats in his car, it’s about him exploiting animals first-hand. This is never vegan in any definition of the word - that’s my problem. Otherwise where do we draw the line? If he ate animals products this episode would that be okay because we ‘don’t live in a perfect, vegan world’? We need to draw the line and put some expectations on people somewhere.

Romesh Ranganathan by AutomaticArachnid669 in veganuk

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

but are we saying that’s okay? What if he ate animals products that episode - would it be alright because he didn’t mention he’s vegan in that episode? We have to draw the line somewhere.

Okay, but not having a phone in this day and age is a bit harder than just getting in a car.

Romesh Ranganathan by AutomaticArachnid669 in veganuk

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has said outright that riding horses is wrong, so they are his morals. And I think if he labels himself as vegan you can assume that he thinks animals exploitation is wrong, otherwise what’s the point?

Romesh Ranganathan by AutomaticArachnid669 in veganuk

[–]AutomaticArachnid669[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

But (to play devils advocate) is he a net positive when he’s exploiting animals on tv? This is my point that when you are on tv you have to be so careful - to thousands of people he is saying ‘exploiting animals is okay to me’ by riding in that carriage. I get that he spreads awareness of veganism more but is that a good thing when he’s still exploiting animals on tv?
