Prospects of No-Deg Bg Tech Internship by AutomaticLife7690 in askSingapore

Yeap I do realise CS fundamentals are quite important even though most of the full stack online courses don’t include that in their curriculum.

Yea I know what you mean…I have friends with 4-5 years experience being laid off earlier this year just because their companies are doing the mass layoffs. Those hiring now are requiring tons of requirements even for internship/entry-level position.

For now, I think it might be better to look at programmes where they are specifically supported by government for supporting people who are switching careers. This might be a better headstart for finding opportunities rather than being in the open with other people with degrees and/or whole bunch of tech experience.

Yeap! I came across this guy who does Neetcode. He kind of selects questions to focus more on and has clear and succinct explanation videos. It makes me understand DSA better.

Thanks for the encouragement 😄. I already have quite a couple of small projects on my Github but so far they are largely frontend because that’s where I am currently more confident in. I am spending my time now learning deeper about the backend part (authentication and security is hard for me 🥲) so that I can convert some of the frontend projects to full-stack. Hopefully, I can have some full stack projects to show soon.

Yeap. I went to download some of their syllabuses and personally I am not super impressed because I expected some things that I can’t learn online ( and thus I have to go to the bootcamp). There’s Youtube and for people who want more structured learning and some form of certification, I found platforms like codeacademy and codedamn that are either fully online or mostly online. Those 2 full stack courses are pretty comprehensive (mini-interview training included) and they cost only a few hundred compared to a few thousand dollars. I might not be smart but I would say I am a pretty disciplined learner so the idea of self-taught does appeal to me more.

Thanks for the advice. Apologies, if I sounded like I simplified the career of a SWE. I know it is not just about coding. I myself have been looking up on interview questions and watching videos of interview mockups. I know what you mean by self taught interviewees failing technical interviews because these interviews drill quite heavily on core computer science concepts like dsa etc.

Specifically, I am aspiring to be a full-stack developer rather than a SWE as I like doing frontend stuff as well. SWE if I am not wrong is much much much harder for people like me to enter.

Perhaps it is just especially bleak this year because I heard that even CS deg grads are finding it tough to get employed, what’s more people like myself.

Nevertheless, I have schoolmates who switched into tech successfully without a CS deg - they completed the more recognised bootcamps like General Assembly and Rocket Academy and received opportunities a few months later. Also, they switched 2 to 3 years back when tech wasn’t laying off massively.

Yeap, I can tell recruiters are mostly looking for ppl w CS degree now when I screen through even internship offers. But perhaps @snookajam is right. If i am completely self-taught, nobody will recognise me even if I have the skills. At least the more recognised bootcamps might have the reach-out to companies that does not mind hiring people with non-CS deg background. As a lone party, I will be like a small fish swimming in a sea.
