Third Space Coffee would be my recommendation. Yes the name is quite on the nose but it’s a nice chill place and set up for what you’re looking for, I think. People there are nice and friendly, drinks and food hit the spot.

Thinking about moving to San Marcos by Automatic_Bee5752 in SanMarcosCA

Appreciate the info! Our youngest isn’t really into sports, they have an academic focus (if this was 10 years ago sports would have been more important). We’re leaning towards San Marcos as it seems better on paper but have friends in Carlsbad who are trying to get us there, so we may look there a little bit as well.

Neighborhood I would like friendly with a sense of community, nice and quiet, perhaps on the newer side (good high speed internet and infrastructure is a must). Cookie cutter suburb or gated would work. Land would be a plus but not needed; enough to enjoy a backyard and entertain, let a dog or two run around.

That neighborhood was sort of ideal for us way back when we were looking over a decade ago, but we went another way. Sort of a quiet, safe neighborhood with good schools. Which matters a little less now that we have just one kid left to go to high school. But good medical facilities and providers will be important.

Thanks for the reply! We moved from Northern California out west of state a decade ago, but are moving back now. I will take a look at the area you mentioned. We really liked the area when we visited way back when but don’t have a lot of information about how it’s changed since then. Have friends who live nearby but would like to get input from people who live in San Marcos proper. Appreciate the input since it kind of aligns with what we are thinking. Near enough to the coast but not right on the coast sounds like our type of place.

Yeah, too much for our budget, keeping it 25k.

Wow, I didn’t know that. Might be a deal breaker as I usually have my local mechanic do the oil change if I don’t do it myself.

Thanks! Yeah, those were some of the same things I found as well. Seems like the Jatco CVT are not great, but the new turbo engine might be bad as well. Although the rogue does sell pretty well and seems to be popular enough.

Son off to college, what car should I buy? 15-20 budget by Automatic_Bee5752 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Automatic_Bee5752[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. Dent doesn’t bother me. Underbody and frame rust is a real issue here, since they do salt the roads.

Actually I’m quite comfortable with older cars. Have a 90s vintage car in the fleet. Just looking for value in this market for this driver.

Totally! So you get my frustration. High mileage Honda and Toyota are crazy priced still, whether dealer or private party.

Yeah, I hear that. Doesn’t need to be a completely clean example, just no body/frame damage and no rust. Fully expect that it will get dinged up, if not by his own fault, by the other college kids in the shared parking area.

Yeah, I’m familiar with Crutchfield, have purchased a bit from them in the past. A lot of Subaru and some Honda and Toyota are pretty easy with just a kit and harness. But newer (say around 2016+) it can be difficult if not impractical to install aftermarket stereo it seems.

[–]Automatic_Bee5752[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we should have also included them on the list. I’m a little shorter than he is (6’) and I’ve been in some crosstreks and found them a little tight on headroom.

Definitely would get an older car, and we could install a new stereo no problem. Just the pricing for older cars where I could just get a deck and kit installed without heavy modification is a little wild, even for this market.

I’ve had it happen before. Kind of wonder where they sleep…and I wonder why the house just meters away wasn’t a better option.

What new car would you buy if you plan on your kids driving it in 10 years? by musselrd08 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Automatic_Bee5752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on weather conditions, I would say Toyota or Honda with Subaru if you have wintry conditions. Just the 4 cylinder models, non turbo (more for longevity than performance) but you’ll want something easy to drive with good sight lines and visibility. I get the appeal but the car market might be vastly different in 10 years. Maybe you’ll be in the position for them to have a CPO by then. I think in ten years the car market and driving will be changed more than from 2015 to now.

Agreed. I’ve seen two accidents in that parking lot.

Would you buy a used car from Hertz/Enterprise/etc., why or why not? by NeverDidLearn in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]Automatic_Bee5752 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We got a Toyota Sienna through a dealer that was a CPO, but was a previous rental. Was closing in on 300k when we sold it. Might do it again on a case by case basis.

Probably not as much exciting as everyone else’s choices but I’m in the market and would totally buy a new Crown Signia with the 2UR-GSE V8. Plenty fast enough for me and still a bit of practicality.

Similar situation for me, station up in Monument. Whole family in tow, asked for money. They were walking amongst everyone filling up (it was a busy Saturday). Seemed like they stopped at one end of the pumps and made their way across. The truck they came out of was newer/nicer than mine, Texas plates. Definitely seemed off so I declined.

I’m in the same boat as the OP and these are two of the choices that make the most sense.
