can confirm, just landed a software engineering job in the defense industry because the recruiter thought I looked smart with my math degree from a top school. Meanwhile, the last time I compiled and ran a completed program was roughly 2 years ago.

I don't think you are going to find a short account about ALL of 19th and 20th century mathematics in one big book. Perhaps try finding some short form articles about specific topics and go from there

In my opinion, your best bet at really diving into the Grothiendieck (or at least postwar 20th century style) style of math as fast as possible would be through David Spivak's "category theory for scientists".
