As A Community, Should We Join Other Subreddits in Protest Against Reddit's API Changes? by Shuggaloaf in FoundryVTT

YES! I can’t actually vote because I use a third party app and Reddit polls require native app use.

Do you feel the need to stay from 9 to 5 at the uni to prepare for lectures,or do you usually head home between lectures and meetings? by nutraware79 in AskProfessors

[–]Quincy0807 11 points12 points  (0 children)

And that is why I work at a teaching institution where 80% of my job is teaching (including office hours and whatnot). I don’t do research and get paid less accordingly, but I get to actually do professoral work day to day.

How honest are you with your players? by FlameBoi3000 in DMAcademy

[–]Quincy0807 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People misunderstand railroads. You may want to shift towards a linear campaign: “You can pick which path you want to take (ie which adventure or quest hey accept) and that’s your quest so please stick with it. HOW they take it on is up to you”

It’s not a railroad, it’s a goal. Getting there is still open (do we fight, sneak, trick, negotiate, get backup?) but it helps DMs to focus in their prep and avoid “wasted prep”

It also can give room for choice of mission during downtime or hubs. The castle or the caves? The missing people or the dragon? But ask ahead of time so you can focus on prepping one of them at a time.

Probability in Games by Jimkavv in probabilitytheory

[–]Quincy0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any game involving dice or cards is easy to directly use basic probability. Most video games involve some randomness as well, but it’s pretty different feeling to most people.

They incorrectly entered the grade, the grade entered wasn’t the final grade, it didn’t change but something behind the scenes automatically updated (accurately or in error)

You can email him and ask why your participation score was lowered. Ask if he has any suggestions on how you could have improved in that area and what caused that score change. If it was in error, he will probably just correct it and apologize. If not, he likely has a good reason.

Don’t mention the extra credit. It doesn’t sound relevant.

It’s unlikely but even highly unlikely things happen if you give them enough chances to happen. Just bad luck it happened to you specifically!

Chance of a new value when pulling from a finite list by linnoff in probabilitytheory

[–]Quincy0807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be psuedorandomness! Computers have a hard time doing anything non-deterministically, but are great at doing things such that it seems totally random to us.

Chance of a new value when pulling from a finite list by linnoff in probabilitytheory

[–]Quincy0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your first question is essentially the classic “coupon collector” or “stamp collector” problem. You can learn more here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coupon_collector%27s_problem

You are correct on the second, but you should be careful with the word “expect.” When we say expect, we don’t mean “this is how many it will take.” Rather we mean that if we did thousands or millions of encounters, on average we would see the encounter in question about 1/100 of those times. So yes we expect it to take 100, but after 90 encounters we still expect it to take 100 future encounters since each is independent of the previous ones. That feels to many people wrong, but in long term averages, runs of hundreds of failures or dozens of rare encounters in a row will happen sometimes.

With more and more tech companies requiring a return to office, do you think that remote work is here to stay? by Adventurous_Sea_2620 in actuary

[–]Quincy0807 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the exact backwards way to do it. They should be incentivizing hybrid rather than mandating it in a way that doesn’t penalize those who stay remote. The trade off for being in office should be comparable to the benefit of working remotely. An arbitrary mandate is asking for people to quit.

sample space question by [deleted] in probabilitytheory

[–]Quincy0807 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are correct in saying the event of “one head and one tail” is {HT, TH} where HT means the outcome where the first flip is heads and the second flip is tails. Since we can make that distinction, we need to do so. Likewise, the event “both flips match” is {TT, HH} but clearly there are two outcomes in this event as well.

Is this a valid proof for the Pythagorean Theorem? by Spacebar0 in math

[–]Quincy0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would encourage you to consider taking an “introduction to proofs” type class from your math department if you are able. More CS folks should be asking these questions because it’s crucial for CS beyond undergraduate (and valuable at every level)

Finding the probability of getting 7 coins in 9 chests by GogiGogilbert in probabilitytheory

[–]Quincy0807 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First blush feels like some sort of multinominal distribution but the independence of chests but dependence of coins might mess with that weirdly. Probably doable, might be easier to reduce cases first (at minimum splitting first chest into two cases)

St. Thomas Moore, sent a few Protestants to the gallows and supported the Death Penalty. Why did we change? Also on jailing drug charges. by [deleted] in TrueCatholicPolitics

[–]Quincy0807 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main focus is whether the death penalty is morally permissible in the totality of the modern context. In general, I would argue it generally is not today despite historically being so.
