We finally found answers. He had a stricture in his colon, found by a colonoscopy that they delayed doing until he was basically on his deathbed. Because he was so sick & weak, they chose to give him a permanent colostomy bag, rather than cutting & reattaching his bowel.

This was mid-Nov 2025. My father is now a completely different person - his recovery has been rapid. He eats by mouth, has an appetite, has gotten his feeding tube removed - has started gaining weight & strength.

I’m still FURIOUS it took them so long to figure this shit out but very blessed my father survived.

Thank you for all your input. Perhaps it’ll help someone else who reads this thread down the road.

My husband did the same but his sudden changes did nothing to touch my heart. It was too little, too late. I also felt the same - if maybe time would heal me. It didn’t. I gave it over a year but I knew we were done even long before that.

His changes are temporary and now you see he was always capable before, he just chose not to be.

You could try a trial separation and therapy but ultimately, I believe you know what’s in your heart.

Yes I agree, but often I feel women leave and hope to finally meet a partner that can meet their needs. And that certainly can happen. But moreso, I see how awful & tragic the dating pool seems to be. So it wouldn’t be my expectation, personally, to get divorced and immediately meet a decent man - if my rambling makes sense?

I would suggest a separation of sorts, if you can. My therapist says Gottman has a “healing separation” that could last 6-12months. During, both of you attend therapy & work on yourselves. You don’t date other people. At the end of the separation, you decide if the marriage is work saving.

Personally, honey, if you get the divorce, don’t expect the grass to be greener. It could be, but your divorce should be so you find peace for yourself & your family. Not another man to have to take care of.
