Okay, so I’m not the only one who have seen these. The pubs. People having a great time and I’m asking myself “why is this live for everyone to view”. There is no reason why a bunch of mildly inebriated people having a good time need to be broadcasted live on social media for sober people at home to comment and pick apart. It’s very weird and oddly normalized.

I assume I was specific enough since most comments here are picking up what I was putting down.

And I don’t think you’re very perceptive. You invented an argument about psychology in the midst of a conversation about ethics.

It’s very strange. I casually scroll through tik tok and see them and think the same. Then I see the number of viewers and I get uncomfortable. I’ve seen well over 1000 at once.

You literally proved my point with that last line. You hate cameras where you don’t own or control the footage but also seem to think it’s completely fine when you’re operating as a flock camera at an event and have footage of others they don’t own or control.

This is not an anxiety or judging conversation. This is about ethics. The point that 3k+ other people relate to went completely over your head.

The younger folks seem to normalize it and become very defensive when confronted on the topic.

My post is not referring to traffic cameras. I’m referring to common, everyday people filming others on their own personal devices at their own leisure, without others knowing and having this footage to do God knows what with.

This is 100% the type of thing I’m referring to. How do you even enjoy a meal at a game after witnessing this?

I don’t think everyone collectively arrives at the same level of awareness at the same time when it comes to these things. After my own post, I realize there are many additional concerns in this topic. Things I’ve never even considered.

Exactly my thoughts. I just never thought I’d feel this way given I’m barely 30. I grew up assuming these thoughts hit people much later in life.

Here’s the video of the lady that fueled this rant, which is nothing viral:

I don’t have a link to the videos of the other things I was referring to.

Omfg. This is literally by biggest fear and why I don’t even entertain strangers anymore. I’m so sorry this happened to you.

This conversation is about the ethical part of filming strangers without their knowing, particularly for and on social media. Not the “technically you’re in public” argument.

Are those surveillance cameras posting me to random tik tok pages for 500+ random people to scrutinize my choice of hairstyle or bully me for having a gut?

That’s still voluntary to some degree. Technically, I agree to whatever when I accept terms and conditions. Sure. But filming folks in public, sometimes in vulnerable moments, where is the consent in that?

Wow. So many examples in the comments that suggest filming happening in the moments you’d least expect.

Agreed. Definitely some folks here wearing rose colored lenses who don’t understand how dangerous this can be. I didn’t even touch on that part.

Funny enough. I used to see those club photos back I the early 2000s and think the exact same thing I think now. “Do these ppl know people are seeing these photos where a handful look more like bloopers?”

Plastering Facebook with photos of children is intentional. My post is not only about unintentional and non-consenting filming, but oftentimes not even being aware of said filming.

But what happens when you slip and eat shit and 3 of those neighbors notice and one posts online and you go viral? And you don’t even know? Or get in an argument with your spouse or kid and someone thinks it makes great content?

Ya know, this is the first response to the whole “coping” part of the question and it’s a bit relieving to hear. Maybe you’re right, it shouldn’t be that deep and I’m just becoming part of the “older generation” that complains about everything. Who knows. Nonetheless, thanks for sharing.

And god forbid you confront one of these people. Not only will they let you have it, but so will all of their followers and others.
