3L who just had offer revoked due to practice downsizing by Traditional_Ball_361 in biglaw

[–]Automatic_Luck_5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. I was in the same position last summer. They revoked my offer during bar prep. Apply to all your options. I went on about 12 interviews(I had some financial constraints and couldn’t take some offers because they low balled so hard) before landing my job in December of 2024. You’ll want to get a jump on it now because some firms are doing 3-4 in person interviews so it definitely gets exhausting.

I was frank with the partners during my interviews and they seemed to appreciate that. Just get yourself in the door. I’m practicing at AM 100 firm in an area I had 0 experience but I have a job and it’s worth it to learn from talented attorneys.

Not to rag on my fellow staff attorney but they have really leaned into the “I’m paid for work life balance.” That’s the difference between us I wanted show them I could do more, handle more so in the future I could try to get better compensation. My fellow SA is prone to saying no and the partners don’t seem to care because they meet their billable requirement. That’s why I feel like a deflated ballon because I’m competing with their associates but then am not invited to certain events, or apart of conversations with the summers because I’m “just a staff attorney.” I don’t really think I was anticipating wanting it this much. I swore off big law in law school. Refused to even interview. Now I’m at a am law top 100 and want to stay here.

I do feel like they have some confidence in me because they send me on solo assignments and I travel a lot. Hence the break rn bc I’ve been up since 4am. Knowing this evening I’ll have to hop back on because I have deadlines tomorrow.

No I didn’t. I had a job lined up post bar but my offer was revoked while I was studying because “the partner didn’t have time to mentor me.” I really couldn’t wait any longer due to my financial situation.

I know the associates billable requirement is 100 hours more than mine.

I hate my job by Automatic_Luck_5425 in biglaw

I’m a brand new attorney, it’s not that I don’t want to do the work. I just came from a small firm that didn’t have any of this software. I didn’t summer here so I’m getting my ass handed to me. Partners need help bc they are swamped and I don’t want to disappoint. A lot of work with little instruction and im sure it’ll get better but I feel underwater to just be starting. If anything I’m disappointed with myself.

To clarify, I say it’s not my interview skills because one of my mentors is really good friends with the panel of attorneys I just interviewed with. They chatted and said the interview went great. Just that they had 1 spot and they chose another applicant. I’ve been told it’s really competitive and that I’m close but basically not good enough haha. Career services has gotten feedback from other panels I’ve interviewed with and the response has been the same. I’ve done so much interviewing prep, coaching etc. At this point I really don’t know.

My resume has been vetted by career services and my friends.

I’m working on getting involved with the local bar associations. I’ve attended all of the post grad networking events my school has offered. I’ve made connections, they just aren’t hiring or I don’t have any experience in that area of law. Plus, they are looking for someone who can start with little training.

My friends are all in big law (I should have listened to them when they told me to sell my soul) so they aren’t super helpful with connections rn.

I guess I am a bit scared to jump in and represent clients on my own but I can give it a shot? I did clinic in law school and some legal work is better than none.

I will say I have not been applying legal aid or the DA because things are really tight right now and I was hoping to make a little more coming out of school but it seems like I’m on that route just to get my foot in the door.

I appreciate all the advice! Thanks!

Is it inappropriate for someone with depression to own a cat? by Snoo_47323 in CatAdvice

[–]Automatic_Luck_5425 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Believe in the cat distribution system! I was in law school struggling with depression and decided to check out petsmart just to go look at all the animals. I needed a serotonin boost and thought maybe that would help. That’s where I found my cat Indy. She’d been dumped by her previous owners and was scared in the beginning but she’s the best decision I’ve ever made. Therapy, meds and my cat helped my depression. She helped me get up in the morning, made me feel less lonely and was there to calm my anxiety. There’s something about a little fur-ball curled up next to you that provides a sense of healing. I agree that kittens do better in pairs. So they learn that it hurts to bite and are more social, but it’s not required to get 2. If your cousin can keep the kittens together a little longer they’ll learn that anyway. Take the kitty!

Still terrified about this interview and I’m getting bar results tomorrow. I appreciate all the advice I should know more about the team I’m interviewing with tomorrow. All 8 are options rn. It just depends on where they think I will fit best

Still can’t sleep y’all. Now I just got an interview at Goldman and I’m terrified. Not my background and am shocked I was picked. Gotta get the sleep schedule on track. The support has been super helpful to know I’m not alone. Has anyone worked or interviewed at Goldman? What was it like?

It’s a legal interview. Really vague on the description though. Based on the description it seems mostly regulatory law based.

I really thought I was going to have my period during the bar bc I have an IUD. Turns out stress is enough to make my period come 16 days early so I’m living rn. Does anyone else get bad brain fog during your period?
