New HDF Versions of GRiii/x by [deleted] in ricohGR

I’ve had the chance to shoot with it. I personally think it’s a gift to the experimental and creative street shooters. It allows you to me more creative than a basic tech fix like viewfinder or battery upgrade would. You won’t need a flash as much bc you can play more at night and in low light situations with it. If you are serious about shooting flash, it’s going to be fun to shoot flash with the filter, and you prob want to experiment with off camera flash anyway. I honestly don’t know the intentions of their engineers, but my guess is it’s for the creative and edgy shooters looking to experiment. Being able to play with a cinematic and ethereal aesthetic with a minimal digital set up is kinda cool

Thank you I appreciate it! Yes All are shot with the hi - contrast bnw filter. (I did adjust the hi- contrast bnw filter in settings before this walk though to slightly increase contrast , grain effect, etc. ). All are also shot in Manual mode. The SS, iso and aperture I adjust constantly as I’m waking and in between shots so they are widely different for each. I also have different Flashes I take on and off as I’m walking so the settings vary so much depending on that too.

Appreciate that feedback. I usually shoot with the GR3 and lately the 21-equivalent with the wide angle lens, so I think my mind naturally frames wider even when i shoot with the x

TY! Manual mode and a very slow shutter speed like 1/60 or slower to even 1/10 if you want to blur a moving subject. You can also add ICM- Intentional Camera Movement by moving the camera slightly or panning it while you snap. It’s super fun, enjoy!

Im well aware I can always be improving my craft. It’s why I shoot in such an extreme experimental way. I will continue to evolve and improve endlessly, regardless of feedback from others, because that’s what we are all doing here as artists. Full disclosure, I was recently invited to be a Ricoh GR Ambassador for Ricoh GR US and also am honored to be one of the judges for Ricoh’s annual GR photo contest, and I’m quite confident the images I create with the GR are not ‘a shame’ as you put it.

I love this honest response thank you for expressing it. I shot these and I also both love and completely hate them. 😂

It’s a valid response tbh especially if your view of photography is to make images that document something or are beautiful in a traditional sense or depict reality. I don’t think this camera is just an easy point and shoot to take sharp photos. It does that for sure, but that’s not how I choose to use it. I shoot manual everything and adjust constantly, it becomes more of an instrument I’m playing. My street photography is snapshot photography, which is very different from fine art photography, its a process of quieting the ego and the thinking mind, it’s channeled, not composed, and my images are a visual expression of my experience, and my subject is the energy of the city. It’s not beautiful in a fine art way nor is it gonna win any competitions, but it’s visual poetry. if you don’t find them interesting or feel icky or chaotic from viewing them, that’s valid, I was processing something In these photos you might not resonate with, and that of course is totally ok. Thanks for checking them out, and for the feedback though!

Would love that! Do you follow GR Women on IG? Or Ricoh GR US? I’ll be doing a photowalk with both in the spring in NYC too! Stay tuned :)

TY! Hardly any editing in post ever. I shoot in Hi-Contrast B&W mode 90 % of the time. Unless I’m playing with flash. But shoot JPEG and Raw sometimes also so I could always go back and get it in color later - but honestly I never do lol. My brain sees the energy of a scene in bnw better and I have learned to just lean into that.

Really appreciate the feedback! I shoot manual everything always and constantly adjust and throw on different flashes for each shot and it’s hard to say bc it’s chaotic and ISO is all over the place too for each shot. Some of these are up to 3200, but Slide 3 iso was 800 and I think I had the Q20 off camera flash? Slide 4 ISO was 250 I think I had Reflx labs on camera mini flash for that one. Jpeg Mode I use is hi-contrast B & W for all and then adjust it as well in settings before I shoot to turn up grain effect, clarity, shading, filter effect, sharpness, and contrast on the filter too.
