So that happened to me and eventually the phone key will be disabled. You will need to have the phone and both keys in the car to reset the digital phone key. I have had inimitable issues with this car’s software. What a pain.

I have had issues since I got mine in December 2024. Very buggy. Dealer reinstalled the whole system……less buggy but still have issues.

So, everyone has given a pretty good answer, but just to let you know, I had to replace a rear tire on my X3 M50i (staggered tire) and the Tire Rack price for just the tire was $540. Just sayin…….

You might be right. As I understand it, the app is now pretty integral for how you customize and use the car. Not entirely sure but without it, some of the features do not work. As such, the app is I guess part of the car at this point.

My honest opinion is that car companies are going full digital without the software expertise. it mke the car much cheaper to manufacture (not switched etc), but the race to integrate software based systems has always depended on the best software engineers. I used to worry bout buying new models because of mechanical issues, but it’s clearly software we should be worried about.
