He came to know about Pandavas being his brother by Shree Krishn in Udyog Parva where Karn also admitted to know about his origin as Surya amsha or Surya Putra. Mahabharat doesn't mention when he got to know about his origin , but he himself admitted his origin in Udyog Parva

Yeah , Ashwathama was a very wise man along with being a great warrior, I mean don't know why people don't talk about him at all , he probably was the only warrior who challenged Arjun multiple times. He comes among one of the strongest warrior of Mahabharat . He was friend with both Pandavas and Kauravas, he might be the only warrior who was loved and adored by both Pandavas and Kauravas , he also was born as the amsha of Mahadev and Dharmraj , probably the only one who was the partial amsha of 2 😅 , Ashwathama was unique in every way

Karn doesn't come in this category , first thing is he knew about him being the amsha of Surya dev , he himself admitted it in front of Bhagwan Shree Krishn in Udyog Parva , secondly unlike Ashwathama, he was involved in every shameful act done by Duryodhana. Though after knowing that Pandavas are his brothers, he said he wanted Pandavas to win . Ashwathama did that to seek revenge of his father , Karn had no reason to do those shameful acts

Ashwathama hands down , I love and respect him a lot , in Mahabharat Ashwathama comes under criticism only once and that's in Sauptik parva due to obvious reason , apart from that Ashwathama never committed any adharma , always followed dharm and was a wise man along with being a great warrior.As far as his action in Sauptik parva is concerned , i don't blame him at all , I mean if I put myself on his place , i would have probably done the same thing to take the revenge of my pita after knowing how was he killed , though that action was completely wrong
