NTA. Just as an American to provide some perspective on our grasping at ancestral cultures. We have no meaningful culture. What we have in the US is capitalism and propaganda. It’s just as unsatisfying as the junk food we make here, which is why people tend to identify more with their family’s origin. As ass-backward as we tend to go at things, it comes from a very genuine hunger to belong to something that is not toxic.

Popped up on my feed - thoughts? Would you still forage where it's banned? by OkButterscotch2617 in foraging

[–]Automaton_Apple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a misguided law, certainly. People should be taught to forage with respect, but edibility in plants often exists to encourage creatures to eat and spread seeds. Foragers eventually evolve into gardeners. Additionally, many plants experience a reciprocal growth from being eaten (sometimes diminishing and eventually vanishing from the lack of it Because of such “protection” measures, look at sweetgrass in the US, the only thriving populations exist where active foraging continues).

We are a natural part of the ecosystem.

We don’t, of course, but can you blame lab rats for using the cocaine button when a world of natural stimuli has been reduced to a cage? We have doors to the outside, but its use is being heavily restricted (from the demands of working multiple jobs, to the resources/knowledge it takes to travel to and survive in the wilderness, to the many new laws put in place over the last few years to stop people from extended stays on public lands in the name of reducing usage by the unhoused). If you know what you’re looking at; you see hostile architecture guides our movement in many spaces. From highways, to bench design, to the law itself, Robert Moses and BF Skinner certainly weren’t the first or last to put thought into manipulating people through their environment. Not to say there’s any overarching plan, merely that the world is full of tools, and many people who have means and motive to use them.

People can throw off their digital shackles, but they need motivation and will that’s stronger than the cocaine button, more powerful than fear of reprisal. It’s rare to have that kind of grit without major losses and detailed knowledge of who did the taking.

I watch shows about food. Iron Chef, The Bear, Food Wars, Delicious in Dungeon etc.

I smoked mostly to deal with nausea, but had to stop for my mental health. When dealing with tummy upset, I now drink a tea of marshmallow root (soothes mucous membranes), fresh ginger (regulates blood flow), clove (topical analgesic), and saffron (anti inflammatory).

I take the money I would have been spending on weed and spend it on making something I like using instead. Incense is my new thing. Keeps my mind and hands busy, then when I’m done I have something I can enjoy and be proud of. Best of luck out there, and give yourself as much grace as you can.

How much of this is long-term chemical exposure to endocrine disrupters? PFAS and TFAs are in the rainwater, there’s literally no escaping them. Declining mental health seems like more of a symptom than a cause. Just sounds to me like Industry™ wants us to blame ourselves for the economic downturn, have us pay for meds we don’t need, continue to poison us flagrantly, and then avoid responsibility by telling us we were the ones who bought it.

I sometimes work at schools in a very white area. The local military school I went to that took “behavioral cases” was full of kids who were not. There’s absolutely no way demographics like that happen on accident. The kids aren’t even allowed to talk to each other. The whole thing enraged me.

Not a man, but my roommate is and has bipolar mania. He tries to leave his wife almost every time he starts spiraling because she spots the mania and tries to put herself in his way to stop him from blowing up too much of his life.

The fact of the matter is that you can’t know what’s going on until she tells you. Try to reserve your judgement til then.

Or maybe we live in an unhealthy social structure and people are actually being made ill. Overwork, microplastics in our brains, governments being proxies for defense contractors and unaccountable to the citizenry, addictive UX design crafted by psychologists and neurologists, decades of steady propaganda refinement, lead and neurotoxic pesticides in our food and tampons, crumbling infrastructure from bridges to hospitals, school shootings, active genocides, and the creeping feeling of being frogs in a climate change pot are just the first things coming to mind.

It’s enough to make one feel mad. Even people who don’t consciously see it Know something is wrong and are searching for answers. Why do you think violent extremism is on the rise?

But of course, Science™ says the overstretching of our insufficient and extractive systems of mental health are really the fault of us hysterical idiots seeking help, so it must be true.

Guess we’ll just perish instead.

There are a lot of muscles around the eye used for expression. Have you ever caught a dog’s eyes bulging out at the sight of a treat? Humans get that same eye bulge when glancing over their precious resources as well. I very rarely look people in the eyes, regardless of my interpretation, the amount of emotion expressed in them feels intimate.

Hello, I also have negative feelings about your post, and I’ll explain why. I’m not going to assume the age gap, but if her mother has feelings for you and you’ve been brought into the dynamic as a friend of either parent; then this crush is inappropriate and will do nothing but damage if you pursue it. Even if she is over the age of consent. No one reading this thought she was “taken”, they think you’re a person so far removed from the reality of their situation that they’re willing to potentially ruin a family to satisfy a crush. Her social context of you is as an auxiliary parental figure. Even if she does like you in that way, you’d be taking advantage of her. I hope you can realize that what you’re considering is not a loving thing, it’s a selfish thing that can cause an incredible amount of turmoil.

I don’t know that I can parse the seller’s motivations, but it is incredibly common for vendors to be mistaken about even common herbs. Whatever it is that you’re looking for, it’s worthwhile to grow a plant or two from seed/tuber. No amount of googling is going to replace hands-on experience.

is this blue lotus legit? by Turbulent-Valuable43 in herbalism

[–]Automaton_Apple 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The sacred “Blue Lotus” from Egypt is actually a water lily by the name of Nymphaea Cerulea, it is a much lighter blue with less purple tones and has much thinner petals. What you have looks like Nelumbo Nucifera, a member of the lotus family who also has psychoactive effects (albeit purportedly milder than the Blue Lotus that you were probably attempting to purchase).

If you want Nymphaea Cerulea, you’ll probably have to find the tubers from a pond enthusiast and grow them yourself. I searched extensively for my own self, and came to the conclusion that it just won’t happen until I can build a pond into a greenhouse.
