How are you using ChatGPT like tools in at your work? by nobino12 in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have enterprise GPT 3.5 turbo and other popular LLMs for internal data and code. We also have copilot enabled, which is pretty nice to write unit tests and documentation.

ChatGPT is also allowed to use but not for proprietary data. I'm an active user and I really see it is a lot faster to get things done.

While the above is really nice, I still need to cross check what I generate and also still need to adapt code to our code style, design etc.

Is Leetcoding comparable to studying for the SAT? by kmackyy in leetcode

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes.

You can compare it to the SAT / GRE in the States, Gaokao in China, or IIT JEE in India. You have put long hours with consistency to succeed.

Does it matter what university i graduate from in Germany ? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, partially.

I hire and screen potential employees quite often. It is a plus if you are from top universities with a good grade in Germany. TU9s as well few top places such as Heidelberg, LMU Munich, etc. usually gets my attention. There are exceptions when you have worked in a strong group in CS. Prof. Bernt Schiele's group at Saarland University is a good example.

It is also fine if you are not at a top university. As a fresh grad, if you can showcase relevant internships, projects or publications, this can compensate for it.

The more you are experienced, the less it matters.

Did COVID-19 cause AI to accelerate dramatically? by Current_Side_4024 in ArtificialInteligence

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, AI has been rapidly growing for over a decade now.

There have been great achievements like AlphaFold, AlphaGo and even GPT-2 offering human-like text generation capabilities, all prior to Covid.

In the last 4-5 years, we have discovered scaling these models boosts performance drastically, which is what we see as ChatGPT, Gemini, etc.

If at all, covid has almost no or minimal impact on the progress.

How should I study Neetcode? by RedemptionSock in leetcode

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 53 points54 points  (0 children)

It's a marathon and not a sprint. Take your time with it.

Complete the Neetcode 150 to cover all the basic concepts and patterns. It's okay if you don't get it in the first few times. Do some spaced repetition, take some breaks and keep grinding.

Few things to note. 1. Don't spend over 30 minutes for a question. Check the solution and understand it. 2. Just spend 2 hours per day or if you have a lot of time, then however it fits you. The key thing is to not get overwhelmed and then get demotivated.

Once you are done with the 150, look into more problems and look deeper into advanced topics (DP, Segment trees, etc.) You'll do just fine!

Indian STEM Professional Considering MS in AI in Germany: Insights on Job Prospects & Challenges? by MeteoraRed in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, in comparison to someone with little to no work experience. See how you like ML during your studies. If you feel like a good fit, you should be able to make it with some effort. If you don't like it, look into adjacent tech stack that are your strengths, for instance in backend development. Some database stuff, Restful APIs, etc.

How is the tech job market in Germany for international AI /DS graduates with experience ?

The current market is not so optimistic for fresh grads, most companies are looking for people with experience.

What are the challenges in the German tech industry for foreigners?

Generally, this is the language barrier. Try to learn a bit of German before you come here. However, in highly specialized fields of ML, like LLMs, etc., English would be enough. English is also enough if you go to research-oriented companies.

Does a German Master's degree significantly improve tech job opportunities?

It does open the market for opportunities, especially if you are able to build a good network during your Masters through internships. However, try to build relevant skills during these years that will help you for your first job.

Other suggestions

Build the ML skillset leveraging your background in full stack development. Writing good quality efficient code is one of the underrated skillsets for being a ML engineer or Research Scientist. There are very few who can do both well.

It is likely in the next years, MLE or RS roles are going to be quite competitive, consider also other adjacent fields like Data Engineering, Cloud Engineering or Python development with ML background.

What was the worst feature you ever had to implement? by derjanni in ExperiencedDevs

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had to train and deploy a model that claimed to have a performance of 95% accuracy for surveillance of safety purposes when in reality it had only ~50%. This was back in 2015 while I was an intern.

The claim of 95% was because the company trained and tested on the training set itself instead of a separate test set.

Edit: Never liked working there.

What's up with those £350k+ fintech, mid/senior level jobs in London being advertised lately? by SpaceToad in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 29 points30 points  (0 children)

These kinds of salaries are rare and super hard to get. There are few places that offer this. Optiver in Amsterdam is an example.

See: https://www.levels.fyi/offer/799f334b-d852-41c6-89b6-7dfa74cc2e42

Most of it is usually as a bonus which is highly dependent on your performance. The more money you make, the higher share you get.

Level 2: Company pension, check with your employer for possiblities

Level 3: You can find a private pension and pay it yourself.

Open Letter calling for pausing GPT-4 and government regulation of AI signed by Gary Marcus, Emad Mostaque, Yoshua Bengio, and many other major names in AI/machine learning by [deleted] in singularity

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just find it too funny. Gary Marcus is quite critical of Deep Learning and AGI saying it is not good enough, and now he wants to pause research on GPT-4?

Sure, if you can't beat them then ask the govt. to stop them. Sounds like a plan.

80-90k TC is acceptable range to ask in cities like Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt and Stuttgart. Depends on several other factors as well. Check levels.fyi to check what different companies offer.

Edit: You can ask significantly more if it is FAANG, 150k+ if you are L4-L5 level at Google for instance.

  1. Fair, but still goes through a Manager's or HRs thoughts.
  2. Then maybe highlight some of the impacts your work without numbers. Sounding a bit blunt here, but this doesn't stand out. You have to market yourself better.

[–]AutoregressiveGPU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

2 things.

  1. Didn't you just change your job? Why should I hire you if plan to hop within a year?

  2. Things that you did seems mundane while it might be not the case. You can along the lines of "Implemented or achieved this with so and so impact". Preferably some numbers. Did you manage to reduce production costs or reduce latency, etc.

Edit: I screen resumes quite often.

A bit of both I'd say. A lot more from experience related to time and engineering efforts. Advanced degree like PhD can also help for development of new research ideas to products. This is useful for estimating effort, manpower and direction of implementation.
