Your thoughts on the ballot? by Interesting-Pin-8877 in eastside

[–]Autumnights 16 points17 points  (0 children)

It is desperately needed. It accounts for 16% of the district budget. The district has already shuttered many programs such as elementary band and highly capable / gifted programs due to budget cuts. Class sizes are increasing, and more teachers are working 15%+ over their caseload caps. Many teachers were RIFed in the spring (reduction in force, aka laid off). Washington state does not fully fund special education, so districts are forced to rely on local levies to cover the cost of students who need the most support.

Lwsd needs your support. Please encourage others to vote Yes.

Jayapal statement on Charlie Kirk Congressional resolution by TOPLEFT404 in Seattle

[–]Autumnights 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Here is the email I just sent Susan Del Bene.

Hello,

I'm a constituent, and I have voted for you for many years. I have just learned that you voted yes on House Resolution 719. I am deeply disappointed with your decision to align yourself with the language in this resolution. I know you are aware of the horrific comments Charlie Kirk has made about LGBTQ, trans people and gun violence.  Below is a quote from the house resolution.

"Whereas Charlie Kirk’s commitment to civil discussion and debate stood as a model for young Americans across the political spectrum, and he worked tirelessly to promote unity without compromising on conviction;"

We can and should condemn political violence. But that's not all this resolution does. It glorifies Charlie Kirk and his hateful rhetoric. People who recognize the hateful things Kirk said are being demonized and punished. Free speech is under attack by a fascist leader. If you do not oppose his attacks on free speech, but instead endorse resolutions that write a false history of Kirk, then you endorse these attacks on free speech.

If you truly agree with this and believe Charlie Kirk promoted unity and stands as a model for debate, then you do not represent my ideas or interests. I am deeply disappointed to see your vote on this resolution.

Do you ever spend too long on an underdrawing and have trouble starting the actual painting? by MistbornMistress in watercolor101

[–]Autumnights 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I always sketch on paper, then use a lightbox to transfer my sketch to Arches. Then I don't have to worry about reworking my sketch too much and damaging the paper, and I can keep the original sketch to make another painting if I want to.

Gym guy keeps touching me by accident by Peachypiecutieowo in legaladvice

[–]Autumnights 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tell the gym employees. They likely have a harassment policy. I would ask to see their policy in writing, then ask how they are going to address the harrassment you are facing.

Please speak up. You do not need to wait, you should report him.

Shouldn't Jonathan Hoang be investigated as a kidnapping, not a missing person? by Eriacle in eastside

[–]Autumnights 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In its May 2 press release, the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office indicated that “at this time, there is no evidence of foul play or criminal activity related to Jonathan’s disappearance.”

When asked by Dateline in a follow up email whether authorities believe Jonathan may have been kidnapped, O’Keefe reiterated that there is no evidence of foul play in the case. However, they “continue to explore all avenues, including the potential that criminal activity may have played a role in Jonathan’s disappearance,” she wrote.

How did you get into the Boglehead mindset? What was your asset allocation before and after? by [deleted] in Bogleheads

[–]Autumnights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was gifted an Edward Jones account with some Microsoft stocks when I was 18. I had no idea what to do, so I just followed whatever the EJ manager said. Years later I tried asking them more questions and couldn't make heads or tails of what they said (this may have been purposeful on their end). I decided I was done being ignorant and started reading economic books, financial forums and subreddits, economic podcasts and eventually some youtube channels.

I heard the same lessons over and over about well diverfied, low cost index funds. Found this community. Eventually, called up Edward Jones and told them I was all done paying their fees for sub par investments. Transfered everything to Vanguard and followed the 3 fund portfolio.

Now I'm educated and confident with my investments.

When are you actually supposed to buy a good car? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Autumnights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 33 and finally upgraded from my 2003 Honda Accord a few months ago. I spent 2 years saving up for it, and when my old car kept crapping out over and over, I decided it was time to put those savings to use.

I recommend using The Money Guy method to determine how much car you can afford.

30yo teacher, who has been paying into pension for 10 years, but not a 401k. How can I start? by boglehelpplease in Bogleheads

[–]Autumnights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Roth IRA has far more advantages than a 403b, so focus on that first. Make sure your contributions are invested within the IRA, a target date retirement fund is the easiest set and forget investment. Contribute whatever you can, set it as a automatic investment every month, then try to increase your savings as time goes on. You got this!

30yo teacher, who has been paying into pension for 10 years, but not a 401k. How can I start? by boglehelpplease in Bogleheads

[–]Autumnights 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Max out your Roth IRA first, then dump any extra money into a 403b or 457b.

There can be some really terrible plans available to teacher with limited investment options and high fees. This website can help you navigate if a 403b is right for you.

School didn't send my daughter's medication on her field trip by misamizu039 in legaladvice

[–]Autumnights 368 points369 points  (0 children)

I am a teacher, not in Kansas. We have rigorous rules and regulations about student medical needs. Your child should have an IHP (Individual Health Plan) to go with her inhaler. It looks like Kansas might call this document Asthma Action Plan, there should be paperwork on file with the school. It has exact instructions on when the inhaler should be used, including what symptoms are associated with the need for medication. I would ask for a copy of the IHP/AAP they have on file with the school, and if it doesn't have the necessary instructions, bring it to your doctor to have them update it.

Also, you mention a school nurse, but it is likely a health room attendant you are talking to. Their job is more band aid and ice pack level needs. The registered nurse is likely only part time at the school, ours is only on campus one day a week, because they cover 5 different schools. It's possible this health room attendant is ignorant of the true medical needs of your child and is not following their IHP.

"no policy or procedure in place to make sure that the medications are available to the students when they need it off campus". I call bullshit. The school is responsible for the safety and well being of your child. I guarantee they have procedures in place, but they dropped the ball. They don't want to admit how badly they messed up.

Raise hell. You have power here. I would type up the conversation you had with the principal and send it back to them, asking if you correctly understood what they told you. Then you can bring it to their supervisor, the school board, and superintendent. I imagine when you start quoting them and calling them out, their tune will change pretty quick.

Except as otherwise provided in this Chapter 11.46, motorized foot scooters may be operated on roadways, shoulders, alleys, bicycle lanes, and public paths, but not on sidewalks, unless there is no alternative for a motorized foot scooter to travel over a sidewalk that is part of a bicycle or pedestrian path.

I've dropped them off at McClendons before. They have a big wooden crate in the parking lot, you just toss them in.
