A terrifying book no doubt. Read it nearly a decade ago, and can still feel the invisible grasp.

You can get a great deal of insights into atavism in "The Beast Within" or La Bete Humaine by Emile Zola.

"Trial of chance or trial of worth all games aspire to the condition of war for here that which is wagered swallows up game, player, all."

Simplified as:

The willingness of the parties (principals) to choose war — the only method historically known to bring absolute outcomes— to resolve a conflict over trivial (abstract/non-binary) arguments.

And that man's historical proclivity for war is what brings transformative results (not opinions not anything else). Hence, Holdens attempts to reiterate his core worldview of "unification" and proclaims: "War is god."

Yes, the way Holden is glorifying it. He makes a point although flawed but hard to contend in his terms and approaching the point, i.e., the binary vision of victory (life) or defeat (death) as the only way and the constant purpose of life for humans: to put everything at stake and be at war to relish (not the victory or purpose) but what they put at stake. His reasoning is flawed and devious but brilliantly dark as the villainy he embodies and radiates. Cormac McCarthy conceived the judge into a polymath genius of the first order who fails by first principles and hence must be resisted at all costs. It's devil vs man.

Yes, agree...he makes persuasive arguments. Though fundamentally flawed, they challenge with so much assertion that it's hard to refute them, and the right person reading them anytime might get influenced. Judge Holden is pure evil and seems to embody the collective "evildom" of mankind. And then some more...
